A funeral mass celebrating the life of Mr. John Anthony (Johnny) Sampognaro, Sr., 85, of Monroe, La will be held at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday October 28, 2020 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Monroe with Rev. Paul Thunduparampil and Deacon Bill Goss officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe, LA.
Mr. Sampognaro passed October 25, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Johnny and Frances shared a unique kind of love. Johnny would always say “I met her at 5, first date at 15 and married by 21”. They always referred to one another as “Honey” and “Baby”.
Johnny was the shining light and leader to his entire family. He was a kindhearted man, full of wisdom, guidance and advise. A man who was always needed, greatly admired, loved very much and always respected, who will be truly missed.
Johnny was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Monroe, LA, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He received his degree in Pharmacy from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). He was the former owner and Pharmacist of Southside Drugs for 28 years. After leaving Southside Drugs he continued his career at Wal-Mart & K-Mart Pharmacies retiring after 63 years. Although he graduated from Ole Miss, he was a tiger fan tried and true, LSU and Neville since his early years. He never missed a home game at Neville Stadium. Johnny was a member of the Louisiana State Pharmaceutical Association and the Fifth District Pharmaceutical Association, where he was awarded the Grant Collins Award for distinguished service.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Russell and Sarah Sampognaro; Son, John A. Sampognaro, Jr., brothers, Joseph V. and Eric Sampognaro.
Survivors: his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Frances Fontana Sampognaro; 6 children, Cheryl LaSuzzo, Michael Sampognaro (Tammy), Dave Sampognaro, Marilyn Bertrand (Timmy), Dayna Sampognaro, and Mia Mason (Brian), Daughter in law, Melanie Sampognaro; Grandchildren: Lauren LaSuzzo, Tony LaSuzzo, Michelle Hall (Wesley), Sarah Cox (Phillip), Trey Sampognaro, Michael A. Sampognaro, Ryan Sampognaro (Sarah), Kayla Sampognaro, Marissa Sampognaro, Tabitha Sampognaro, John Michael Sampognaro, Claire Sampognaro, Emily Sampognaro, Blake Bertrand, Luke Bertrand, Taryn Soignier (Andy), Ashley Maxwell (Jeff), Logan Caviness, Hunter Caviness (Cassidy), Alec Mason and Cara Mason. Great Grandchildren: Brayden Hall, Ella, Blakley, Bentley and Shepard Sampognaro, Addelyn Hamm, Larken Parker, Gunner Soignier, Sophie Caviness, Leah Baker, Luke and Levi Maxwell ; sister, Pam Eubanks; two brothers, Kevin Sampognaro and Craig Sampognaro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Anthony Joseph (Tony) LaSuzzo, Wesley Hall, John Anthony III (Trey) Samponaro, Phillip Cox, Michael A. Sampognaro, Ryan Sampognaro, John Michael Sampognaro, Blake Bertrand, Luke Bertrand, Scott (Andy) Soignier, Logan Caviness, Hunter Caviness and Alec Mason.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Tom Bourgeois, Timmy Bertrand, Brian Mason, Kevin Sampognaro, Dr. Mike Sampognaro, Dr. Greg Sampognaro, Dr. Charles Sampognaro and Dr. Robert Spatafora.
On Tuesday October 27th, 2020, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with vigil wake service starting at 6:30 P.M.
Memorials may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Pharmacy or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
