Joe Michael Barton
September 29,1953 - March 22, 2021

Joe was born in Gilbert Louisiana on September 29, 1953 To Elmer and Castella Barton. Elmer and Castella already had 3 grown children and a teenager, they thought their family was complete however Joe was the "Surprise!" baby, the first of many wonderful surprises that would come from this remarkable man. Joe's baby sister Carmen was born in 1955. The Elmer Barton Family was then complete.

Joe graduated from Wossman High School in Monroe in 1972. As a young boy playing alone in his yard, Joe loved to play baseball with his imaginary friend named CD. He would throw the ball and run to catch it yell "catch that ball CD"! CD remained his faithful friend until Joe started grade school and found new friends in which to play baseball. Joe's early childhood baseball games were the little seeds planted to what would become a lifelong journey with the sport, making hundreds, if not thousands of friends along the way.

Joe's career varied over the course of nearly 50 years, spending 42 years at Key Mill Works in Monroe. Joe finished up his career at the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office assigned to OPSO Men's Transitional Work Program, where he often tried to help inmates improve their lives. In addition to his career, Joe volunteered with many different programs including assistance with Handicapped and Disabled Hunts, Youth Hunts, coaching and umpiring generations of youth baseball. Joe also served as a member of the OPHS Chain Gang during football season for 32 years.

Joe's highest honors outside of his family was in 2005 when he was awarded the Presidential Award for Volunteering for the Federal Wildlife and Fisheries on behalf of President George W. Bush and in 2017 because of his years of umpiring, he was invited to come umpire at the National Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

Joe's best job was that of a father to his son Casey, his absolute pride and joy. The day Casey was born we joked that Joe needed some lead shoes to keep his feet on the ground. Joe was not just Casey's father, he was his best friend, confidant, fishing buddy, hunting buddy and taught Casey his love of Baseball, in return Casey was Joe's little shadow and as a result, grew up to be a fine, wonderful, and brave young man. So many words describe Joe Barton but just a few that shed light are caring, trustworthy and simple. Nothing was too complicated in Joe's world; his quiet calm brought many people peace and strength. He was one of the happiest people in the World because there was only one side of the bed for Joe Barton to wake up on, the right side. His happiness and genuine love of life was infectious, he could make a person smile by telling one of his unlimited fish or hunting stories. In most of Joe's fishing and hunting stories he had been victorious on a hunt or out on a boat, only to return to the camp or the shoreline empty handed with one of his famous homespun tales like he shot a 12 point buck but went to find it and it had disappeared or he caught the biggest bass he’s ever reeled in and got it onto the boat and it slipped out of his hand putting it on the stringer, only to return to the shore with a dangling empty stringer and the most animated description of that big bass....that simply got away.

Joe never took life too seriously. Upon finding he had some health issues; he asked his Doctor "Can I still eat Fried Fish" and the Doctor replied "Grilled" and without missing a step Joe said, "Now why would I want to ruin a perfectly good fish"? Joe kept up his spirits right to the very end. One of his last conversations with Casey he gave him some sage advice in classic Joe fashion. Let the fish tell you how they want it, and your family will never go hungry, If its slow use Devils Horse, if it's fast use a Whopper Plopper.

March 22, 2021 God had to put Heaven’s fish on notice because Joe Barton had arrived, and he was itching to fish!

On Joe's last night, as family gathered around, Joe told Casey how much he meant to him, how proud he was of the man he had become. How blessed he was to have a first-class daughter in law Danielle who gave him three precious grandsons whom he adored and brought him the most precious joy. He asked Casey to tell the youngest Mason, that Papaw would be watching him from the dugout.

While we gather together to remember Joe, let us remember that he had a whole host of family waiting on him, his parents that he took care of for years, his baby sister Carmen, his brother Lynn and his father-in-law Mr. Pohl who served as a father to Joe after losing his own. He was one of his best friends.

The night before Joe went to Heaven, Casey prayed and told God he would give up his father, so he could go to his. What beautiful selfless sacrifice of a man who taught him everything he knows and defines his very being.

Joe left a little piece of his heart with every person he ever encountered. Cherish it, pay it forward in his memory.

He is home with his Father now and we will all miss him.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Castella Barton of Monroe, LA, his sister Carmen Barton Stamper of West Monroe, LA, his brother Lynn Barton of Mesquite, Texas, his brother-in-law Delton Blackie Smith and his nephew Randy Barton.

Joe is survived by his son Casey Barton and wife Danielle of Sterlington, grandsons Mason Barton, Elijah Powell, and Chance Crow. Brother Billy Barton (Cindy); sisters, Joyce Barton Smith, Peggy Barton Casamento (VJ), numerous nieces, nephews and multitudes of friends and associates.
