Yong San “Joe” Chao 

Yong San “Joe” Chao of Monroe, Louisiana passed away on Friday, September 20, 2013, in an automobile accident. He was 71. Joe was born on October 6, 1941 in Taichung, Taiwan, the third of eight children. He attended National Taiwan University for his undergraduate work, and came to the U.S. in 1968 to attend Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, earning a master’s degree in chemical engineering. Joe moved to Monroe in 1970, where he immediately fell in love with our Sportsman's Paradise – so in love, in fact, that it was the first and only place he interviewed. Joe assimilated quickly, learning to hunt and becoming an avid and accomplished fisherman. Joe worked at Olinkraft, now known as Georgia-Pacific, in the research and development department for ten years before leaving to co-open the China Doll Restaurant with his wife Lynn, which they owned for sixteen years. He also owned an import company for fifteen years before retiring to play many rounds of golf at Calvert Crossing. We would be remiss not to mention that he earned three – THREE, count 'em – holes in one. Joe married his beautiful wife Lynn in 1967, and they lived happily together for 46 years. Joe and Lynn had three sons together: Leon, 43; Vince, 39; and Joey, 31.

Joe enjoyed such activities as golf, fishing, travel, drinking Heineken, and climbing trees to cut limbs off of other trees. He was adamant about doing all home-related handiwork himself – something his wife was not the biggest fan of – and once nearly lost a toe in a terrible lawn mower mishap. Joe was a kind, generous, wonderful man, and will be tremendously missed.

In lieu of a funeral, the family will be holding a visitation from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, on Thursday, September 26, 2013.
