Memorial services for Joann Erickson Meek, 83, of West Monroe, will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, December 12th at First Methodist Church in Dallas, TX with Rev. Tom Downing officiating.
Joann died Thursday, November 28, 2013. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe, LA.
Joann was born in 1930 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She received a degree in Biology from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. She moved to Dallas, Texas in 1957 where she raised her two daughters and two sons. She worked on or ran every school or church committee she was ever asked to be involved with; she had a hard time saying “no”. She worked as lab technician in Dallas and ultimately served as Lab Director at Children’s Medical Center. While at Children’s she designed treatment methods and centers that allowed for children to only be tested outside their rooms to allow them to view their rooms as sanctuaries. Joann was a 38 year breast cancer survivor.
Joann loved to travel and loved the outdoors. She excelled at basketball and synchronized swimming in her youth and later became an avid runner and skier. She was a frequent Elderhostel participant and was a graduate of Northwest Outward Bound where she rappelled down at least one of the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho.
Completely incapable of sitting still, after retiring from Children’s, she worked as volunteer for the Farmers Branch Senior Services Office. Joann was smart, loving, and compassionate. A true servant soul. If Heaven is organized in sections, by now Joann has hers running smoothly.
Survivors include her daughters, Margo Morgan and husband Charles G. Morgan MD of Monroe, LA, and Linda Hale and husband Pete Hale of Georgetown, TX; sons, Kevin Meek and wife Donna Meek of Austin, TX, and Craig Meek MD and wife Suzanne Meek MD of Longview, TX; grandchildren, Erin and Tim Powell, Rachel and Cole Farr, Justin Hale, Courtney Hale, Jared Meek, Ryan Meek, Jessica Meek, Madison Meek, Caroline Meek, Davis Meek, and Andrew Meek; sister, Shirley Erickson Kendall and husband Dave Kendall of Albuquerque, NM.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family has requested that anyone who wishes to help continue Joann's years of service through a gift to either StoneyBrook Memory Care Home in West Monroe, LA or to "Children's Medical Center" of Dallas, Texas by going to the "giving" section of www.childrens.com and making a "tribute" gift in Joann's memory. Joann’s family wants to thank the directors and staff at StoneyBrook and Hospice Compassus for their wonderful care of their mother.
