A service of worship to celebrate the life of Jo Elizabeth (“Jo Libby”) Johnston, 87, of Monroe, formerly of Sterlington, will be held in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe on US Highway 165 on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11:00 AM with Glenn Ford officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery on South Grand Street in Monroe. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time at Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe.
Ms. Johnston was born July10, 1937, in Ferriday, Louisiana. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on September 1, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Bishop Johnston, Jr., and Mary Ann Dixon Johnston. Survivors include her brothers, John Bishop Johnston, III (Jody) and Jay Dixon Johnston (Jan) and sisters, Mary Ann Currie, and Nina Marie Pate (George) and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Ms. Johnston was a graduate of Neville High School and attended LSU where she obtained a B.S. in Education. After graduation, she taught school in California and Pensacola, Florida. She then moved abroad and taught in the American Elementary School of Bad Toelz, Germany in Bavaria, for over 25 years. When she was not teaching, she enjoyed cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, kayaking and attending cooking schools. She was an adventurous traveler who visited many countries throughout Europe as well as Israel, India, China, Burma, Ceylon, Jordan, and the USSR. She settled down in Monroe after retirement, traveling to her beloved Pensacola Beach whenever she could.
Ms. Johnston was a member of the Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and the Tuesday morning Ladies Bible Study which were both very near and dear to her heart. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames of America and Delta, Delta, Delta sorority.
Pallbearers will be, William Jackson Currie, John Bishop Currie, Junot Dixon, John Rea, Todd Williamson, and Ken Vines.
Mrs. Johnston’s family would like to thank her doctor, Erin Robinson Breard, her caring and attentive niece, Doll Vines, her friend, Chelle Rivers, the staff of The Gardens of Georgia Tucker and her loving caregivers, Latoya Brown, Kurtisha Brown, and Dinita Brown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Place Ministries, The Food Bank of NE Louisiana or the ministry of your choice.
