Jerry Neil Garner, Sr.

Funeral Services for Jerry Neil Garner, Sr., 74, of Monroe will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday morning, September 24, 2011, at North Monroe Baptist Church. Officiating will be Pastor Bill Dye, along with Rev. Warren Eckhardt and Rev. David Worthington. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Garden of Memories in Jonesboro under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

Jerry passed away at his home on Thursday morning, September 22, 2011, following a brief illness. He was a member of North Monroe Baptist Church where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee and the Finance Committee.

Jerry was preceded in death by his mother and father, James J. Garner and Arrelia Tumlin Garner; one brother, James Garner; and two sisters, Wanda Atkins and Selwyn Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bernice Carson Garner; and two children, Jerry N. Garner, Jr. of Ruston and Scott Garner and wife Allison of Pace, Florida. Two grandsons also survived, Jake and Seth Garner of Pace. As well, Jerry leaves behind one brother, Jackie Garner and wife, Shirley, of McKinney Texas. He is also survived by his Brother and Sister-in-Law, Ronnie and Jolene Carson of Hodge. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He also leaves behind many special friends in the Monroe and Jackson Parish areas—as well as those with whom he has become acquainted, over the years, in the packaging industry.

Jerry will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. As well, he was an avid golfer—and enjoyed tailgating with family and friends before Louisiana Tech Bulldog football games.

Jerry was a graduate of Weston High School, and of Louisiana Tech University, having earned a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Having served over 40 years in the bag industry, Jerry retired as Vice President of Operations for Stone Container Corporation Bag Division. Through the years, Jerry was given many awards of appreciation and recognition, to include election as a Life Director of the Louisiana Tech Engineering & Science Foundation, the Outstanding Alumnus Award for the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department of Louisiana Tech University, and the Jackson Parish Chamber of Commerce person of the year award.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Jay Atkins, John Tannehill, Clarence Guice, Mack Magee, Ronnie Carson, and Francis Kilbride. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the members of his Sunday school class, and Jerry’s golf group at Bayou DeSiard Country Club.

Friends may call on the family at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, on Friday, September 23 between 5 and 7 p.m.

The family has requested that memorials be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
