Jeannette Peck AckelMemorial Services for Jeannette Peck Ackel, 92, of Monroe, Louisiana, will be held at 12:00PM Monday, April 25, 2016 at St. Paul’s United Methodist with Rev. JoAnn Pounds officiating. Visitation will be held at 11:00AM until service time on Monday.Jeannette was born on October 1, 1923, in Greenville, South Carolina, and passed away peacefully in Monroe, Louisiana, on April 20, 2016. She attended Ouachita Parish High School where she graduated with honors. After high school she went to Northeast Louisiana Junior College where she was Homecoming Queen, Beauty, a member of Kappa Delta social sorority and Purple Jackets, an honor society. She went on to Louisiana Tech where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. Continuing her education, she was awarded a master’s degree from Northeast Louisiana University. Jeannette spent her professional life as an English and Louisiana History teacher at Robert E. Lee and River Oaks schools until her retirement in 1984.Active in her church, St. Paul’s United Methodist, she served as librarian for many years. Jeannette was a member of the Susanna Wesley Chapter of the United Methodist Women’s Circle and in 1993 was elected St. Paul’s Woman of the Year. She was also a member of ADK, a teacher’s group; PEO, a philanthropic organization and 20th Century Book Club. Interest in her community led to her serving as Chairwoman of the Monroe Bicentennial under Mayor Bob Powell. Her love of Monroe’s rich past led to a series of presentations for clubs and schools about Monroe’s founding families, their old homes and historic cemeteries. Jeannette was a docent for the historic Layton Castle, was a founding member of the Monroe Historic Commission and received an award for Historic Preservation from the Monroe Garden Study League.Her passion for genealogy led to her membership in many patriotic societies including the Fort Miro Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; National Society, Daughters of Colonial Wars; Sir John Payne Chapter of Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century; John Robinson Chapter, Daughters of American Colonists and General William Claiborne Chapter, Daughters of 1812.She was preceded in death by her husband Carter Barton Ackel; parents Jeannette Swoope Peck and James Godwin Peck, Sr. and siblings Hortense Peck Melton and James Godwin Peck, Jr.Jeannette is survived by her daughter, Jeri Ackel Kelly and husband David; son, Charles Scott Ackel and wife Donna and son Richard Barton Ackel; grandchildren, Jeffrey Scott Ackel and wife Carrie, Andrew Jordan Ackel and wife Jessica, Carter Alexander Kelly, James Barton Kelly and fianc Melissa Maldonado; and by her great grandchildren, Harris Scott Ackel, Wesley Ryan Ackel, Thomas Porter Ackel, and Addison Lee Ackel.The family would especially like to thank Jackie Keith and Betty Weems for their loving care of our mother.
