Funeral services for Jane Stewart will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. at Graceminster Church in Monroe. Reverands Ken Stegall and Phillip Azad will preside. Visitation will take place at the church from noon until 2:00 P.M. She passed away in Baton Rouge on March 7, 2025, with her family by her side.
Jane was born on February 9, 1937, in Alto, Louisiana to L.C. and Allyne Gill. She grew up in Fairbanks, graduated from Ouachita Parish High School, received her undergraduate degree at what is now the University of Louisiana Monroe, and her Masters from Louisiana Tech. She taught elementary school for 44 years. She was the very first 1st grade teacher at River Oaks School in Monroe before teaching 5th grade at Cedar Creek in Ruston and retiring from Lakeshore Elementary in Monroe in 2011.
Jane was proud of the students she had the chance to influence through the years and always beamed when she would run into one later in life. She’ll be remembered for her sweet, kind, and loving demeanor with an overwhelmingly positive outlook on life. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend and had an incredibly positive impact on all who knew her.
Her passions and her life revolved around her family, faith, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, L.C. and Allyne Gill; and her brother, Lloyd Gill. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Mary & Gaylan Billington (Henderson, NV), Beth Middleton (New Orleans), and Rob & Nicki Stewart (Baton Rouge); eight grandchildren and their spouses, Clay & Marijane Billington, Chase & Heidi Billington, Kirkland Middleton, Thomas Middleton, Audrey Stewart, Molly Stewart, Ethan Charlson, and Owen Charlson; eight great grandchildren; and her first cousin, Chris Childress who was the sister she never had. Her four nieces and nephews and their spouses were also like her own children, Mitchell & Monique Gill, Sheila Manning, Barbara & Mark Hatok, and John & Denise Gill.
Jane was a lifelong member of Grace Presbyterian Church which later became Graceminster Presbyterian Church and was their organist since she was a teenager. She also enjoyed her bible studies with the members of the Jackson Street Church of Christ. She was a student and believer of the word of God and lived her life accordingly.
In her retirement, Jane enjoyed traveling, spending time with her children, playing dominoes with her friends, and playing the piano for Wednesday morning hymn singings at the Ouachita Council on Aging. In what little spare time she had, you could always find her doing for others and looking after her friends.
Her family is incredibly grateful to her wonderful neighbors who were like family to her and who were quick to look out for her needs and make her part of their families as well. She was truly blessed to have these wonderful people in her life.
Pallbearers will be her six grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Mitchell Gill, John Gill, Mark Hatok, Steven Fitzhugh, Andrew Ashley, and John Richardson.
The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful doctors who treated her over the past few months. Dr. Kirk Mullins in Baton Rouge and Dr. Sarah Grandy in Sterlington cared for her like family. Much appreciation is also given to the Dr’s, nurses, and staff at St Francis Hospital and Baton Rouge General Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jane’s memory to the Ouachita Council on Aging or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
