During World War II while serving in the Army as a field artillery reconnaissance party radio operator in the European Theater of Operations he radioed fire missions from observation posts to the guns. His unit advanced through France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and across the Elbe River in Germany into what later became a prearranged part of the Russian occupation zone. After the enemy was no longer visible from the last observation post his unit was withdrawn from combat. The war in Europe ended shortly afterward. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement.

He received a bachelor’s degree with a major in industrial design from Auburn University (then Alabama Polytechnic Institute) in 1949 and a master’s degree with major in advertising design from the University of Louisiana at Monroe (then Northeast Louisiana University) in 1973. From 1958 to 1982 he was employed as package graphic designer at Graphic Packaging International, Inc. (known formerly by other names).

Active in the YMCA, he served as secretary of the Twin Cities YMCA Board of Directors and as president of the Twin Cities Y’s Men’s Club.

As a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church his greatest love was missions. He served in missions leadership positions at St. Paul’s UMC, in the Monroe District of The UMC and was also a member of the Louisiana Conference Board of Global Ministries of The UMC. He was appreciative of being named Chair Emeritus of Missions at St. Paul’s UMC.

After retirement he was actively involved in volunteer work that included adult literacy, urban outreach, work for and at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge and in faith-based environmental stewardship. He served on the Board of Directors of the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. Awards received include Service to Mankind by the Monroe Sertoma Club in 1992; Volunteer Conservationist of the Year in 2003 by Louisiana Wildlife Federation, an affiliate of National Wildlife Federation and in 2007 an award for conservation by Monroe Garden Study League, an affiliate of The Garden Club of America.

Jim was known for his dry sense of humor. He loved his family, he loved the outdoors and he marveled at God’s creation. He authored a collection of nature poems entitled Unilateral Conversations with Nature plus Some Other Stuff, offered for sale at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

Pallbearers will be James Moore, Aaron Moore, Daniel Moore, Reed Griffin, Ed Johnson, and Wallace Hardy. Honorary pallbearers will be Fellowship Retired Men.
