James L Whitman, Sr.

September 14, 1928 — July 30, 2020

James Lemoine Whitman, Sr., 91, died on July 30, 2020 after a lengthy illness.
Private family graveside services will be held at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA with Rev. Brian Mercer officiating under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Rayville.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rayville, Louisiana and an active community leader in Rayville for many years. He managed Scott Truck and Tractor Company in Rayville, partnered in W and W Farms, and later owned Whitman Agriculture. He served on the boards of Rayville Producers Inc. cotton gin, Riverfield Academy, and Pickin' and Ginnin' Festival. He taught Sunday school and was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Rayville and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He was a loyal supporter of Louisiana Tech University. He was a member of the Louisiana National Guard and was awarded as the Most Outstanding Recruiter for the state, winning a trip to Washington, DC and lunch with Dwight D. Eisenhower. He and his late wife, Sue, served as Grand Marshals of the Rayville Christmas Parade. His warm personality and friendly, smiling face will be greatly missed by family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Sue Jane Shaughnessy Whitman; his son, James L. Whitman, Jr.; his parents, Simmie and Alverne Whitman; and his sisters, Margaret Whitman Kalil and Mary Anne Whitman Smalling.

Survivors include his daughter, Laura Jayne (Jaynie) Hare; his son, David Alan Whitman, Sr.; and his brother, Jerry Thomas Whitman. Grandchildren include Trey Whitman and wife, Sarah, Lee Carpenter and wife, Caroline, Daniel Hare and wife, Elizabeth, Nathan Hare, Mary Anne Whitman, David Alan Whitman, Jr. and Mary, and ten great-grandchildren; also survived by a host of extended family and friends.
