James J. Cozine, Jr. was born on September 9, 1943 and died on August 11, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.
James graduated from Louisiana Tech in 1967 with a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts. He then served in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of Captain. Dr. Cozine received his Ph.D. in 1976 from Texas A&M University. His dissertation “Assault on a Wilderness” concerning the BigThicket of Texas was published by the University of North Texas Press. He was employed at Lamar University prior to 1983 when he began working at ULM eventually becoming the Director of Educational Talent Search and retiring at that position.
Dr. Cozine was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Ruth Cozine; his favorite aunt, Annie Haley; and cousin, Bobby Deal.
Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sharon; his son, Steven; as well as many relatives, including his loving cousin, Carolyn Deal.
As anyone would tell you who knew Jim, he was a great advocate of pranks and jokes, which he reveled in playing on his coffee group buddies and his workmates in Educational Talent Search.
Dr. Cozine made many lasting friendships through the years including his Kappa Alpha Fraternity members especially Pat Riordan and wife Judy, Bill Carter and wife Nancy and Chris Eby, his close friend from his youth Colonel Robert Lewis and wife Jan and dear friend and partner in their love of history and politics, Dr. Glenn Jordan.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, August 15, 2021, at the Mausoleum Chapel at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe, LA.
