James Hewitt Gross

February 15, 1934 — September 22, 2021

James Hewitt Gross, lovingly known to all as “T-Daddy”, 87, was born on February 15, 1934, in Mansfield, Louisiana. He passed into eternal life on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. Funeral services will be held at Grace Pointe Church, 1905 Auburn Avenue, Monroe, LA on Monday, September 27, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. with Bishop Bennie Jones and Pastor John Jones officiating. Visitation will be at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, on Sunday, September 26, 2021, from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M.

T-Daddy was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie and Clarence Gross, and siblings, Paul Gross, Doris Gross Reed, Clarence Gross, and David Gross. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Laffitte Gross; daughters, Donna Gross Barefoot (Eric), Sherry Gross Stephens (Mike); son, Gary “Boogie” Gross (Julia); grandchildren, Whitney Barefoot, Clay Barefoot, Erin Stephens, James Michael Stephens (Chelsea), Katie Stephens, and River Gross; great-grandchildren, Deason Parker, Bentlee Parker and Shaw Stephens.

He is a graduate of Mansfield High School where he played football for the Mansfield Wolverines. T-Daddy was an amateur boxer, and in 1954, won the Golden Gloves Regulation Tournament. In 1963, he moved his family to Monroe to pursue a 32-year career in offshore drilling. Although spending most of this career in the Gulf of Mexico, he was able to professionally explore other parts of the world like Africa and Iran.

T-Daddy’s biggest delight was watching his grandchildren play sports but loved football the best, especially his beloved TIGERS – Neville and LSU. He was an avid golfer, adored landscaping, and spent countless hours giving gardening tips to others while making his own yard a showplace.

He had a very giving and generous heart and was always reaching out to those who needed a helping hand.

Grandsons James Michael Stephens, Clay Barefoot, and River Gross and 2 great-grandsons Deason Parker and Bentlee Parker will serve as Pallbearers along with close family friend, Tim Harvey. Honorary Pallbearers are Billy Pee and Robert McGee.

T-Daddy will be extremely missed, but we find comfort in knowing he is with his Lord and Savior. The family wishes to extend their grateful appreciation to Dr. Maxwell McDonald, Ascend Hospice Care, and longtime family physician, Dr. David Barnes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made at the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
