I. R. "Ray" Nixon, Sr.

Ray was born in Crowville, LA on February 17, 1936 to George Freeland Nixon and Leona Gordon Nixon. His father took him to live with his aunt and uncle, William Worth and Ethel Nixon Walters, and their children, Kouzea, Katrina, Worth A., and Twyman M., when his mother passed away soon after his birth. He grew up in Baskin, LA, on the family farm, where he rode a goat named Billy until he was old enough to ride a horse. His uncle constructed a small wagon for the goat to pull.
Ray led an interesting, challenging life. He worked in the fields of mechanics and carpentry. He could do almost anything he set his mind to. His skill with horses was well known, and he won many trophies and awards. He enjoyed deer hunting with his walker dogs, and when he went bass fishing all he ever brought home were tall tales.
He was a member of The First Baptist Church of West Monroe, and sang in the Adult Choir for many years.
Ray never met a stranger. Those who knew him will miss his smile, his giving heart, his love for animals, and his passion for life. He suffered many medical setbacks during his lifetime, but always seemed to take them in stride, until time and age took their toll.
Ray is predeceased by his parents, his sisters Dorothy Gwendola Nixon and Juandine Nixon Williamson, son, I. Ray Nixon, Jr., aunt and uncle William Worth and Ethel Nixon Walters, his cousins Worth A. Walters, Twyman M. Walters, Katrina Walters Wicker, and Nettie Tabb Nixon, former wife, and mother of his children. He was also predeceased by close friends Jimmy Sanford, Calhoun, LA, Jerry Hattaway, West Monroe, LA, and Clarence Frost, Frost Town, LA.
He is survived by his wife Rebecca Cobb Nixon, West Monroe, daughter, Kay Nixon Rosier (Dave), of Broken Arrow, OK, granddaughter, Amy Nixon Barnett (Johnny), five great grandchildren, Jonathan, Christopher, Kaylee, Judah, and Shelby Lyn, of Sand Springs, OK, cousin Kouzea (Dee) Walters Norman Bryan, Rayville, LA, and Jerry Hollis, Downsville, LA, best friend and former business partner.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
