Funeral services for Howard Barry Mitchell, 95, of Monroe, will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, October 31, 2013, in the chapel at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. David Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell died Monday, October 28, 2013. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a Master Sergeant during World War II, participating in the Normandy invasion and in the Ardennes Forest during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a Bronze Star.
Born in Delhi, Louisiana he moved to Southern Indiana after the war and graduated from Evansville College in Evansville, Indiana. He worked extensively in the oil business as a partner in L&M Drilling Co. and later as a home builder. He returned to Louisiana in 1978. Mr. Mitchell was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. He was active at the Carolyn Rose Strauss Senior Center in Monroe. He was a volunteer for the Red Cross and taught the AARP 55 Alive driver safety program for many years. He was also a past president of the Ouachita-Twin Cities Chapter of AARP.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his wives, Bobbie Marie Mitchell, Peggy Young Mitchell; brother, Jack Mitchell; sister, Ruth; and parents, John and Bernice Sanders Mitchell.
Survivors include his daughter, Betty Evalyn Mitchell; and his son, William Patrick Mitchell.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the funeral home.
