Funeral Services for Mr. Herbert O. Hayes, 100, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 28, 2016 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe with Fr. Frank Coens officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paschal’s Catholic Church Cemetery in West Monroe. Mr. Hayes was born September 16, 1915 in LaSalle Parish, LA and passed away June 25, 2016 in West Monroe, LA. He moved to Monroe in 1928 and had many jobs working for 15-20 cents per hour. On March 3, 1940, he began working for Gay’s Clothing for $18.00 a week and 6% commission. After WWII started, he was discharged from the National Guard to be eligible for draft. When he was drafted, they put him in the Navy instead of the Army. Mr. Hayes was on three different merchant ships in the Pacific. He was hospitalized in Perth, Australia and later sent to Sidney and then to hospital in Merryland, Australia. Herbert was medical discharged on September 7, 1945.Mr. Hayes was a member of Lady of Fatima Church. He was a member of the National AmVets and charter member of Post 5 in Monroe, served as adjutant for many years, Dept. Commander two terms, SE National 3rd District Commander, National Exe. Committeeman several apt National offices. In 1982, Mr. Hayes was awarded the highest award by National AmVets; The Silver Helmet. He with his wife, Mildred, attended 32 national conventions in many states. Mr. Hayes was also life member of VFW7882, DAV No. 8 and Fleet Reserve. He was a 32nd degree Mason, member of Scottishrite and member of Barak Shriners, and life member of American Legion Post 13. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Hayes. Survivors include his two brothers, Henry Hays and Marvin Hays; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; two nieces, Evelyn Beaird and husband Paul, and Dusta Hofler Holmes; along with numerous other nieces and nephews. Mr. Hayes’ nephews will serve as pallbearers.Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. until Service Time on Tuesday at Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA.
