Herbert was born and raised in Monroe and graduated from Ouachita High School in 1940. He attended Louisiana Tech University and Tulane University and graduated from Tulane with a B.S. in Architecture while also serving two years in the Merchant Marine during WW II. He was later awarded a Masters Degree in Architecture from Tulane.
After World War II, Herbert worked for Douglas Aircraft in California while attending
Stanford University but left the aerospace industry in 1945 to work with his father, H.H. Land Sr., as an Architect in Monroe.
Herbert became known for the many schools & public buildings which he designed in over a dozen North Louisiana parishes. Herbert mentored many young architects throughout his lengthy career. Although Herbert retired many years ago, he still enjoyed coming in to the office on a regular basis.
Herbert’s professional accomplishments over the past 50 years are too numerous to count but he completed hundreds of commercial projects including the designs for many landmarks in Northeast Louisiana including Olin Hall Dormitory, ULM Nursing Building , Malone Football Stadium, ULM Natatorium, the Ouachita Parish Courthouse & Annex , Monroe City Court, Ruston City Hall, Rayville City Hall, Grambling Nursing School, and several dormitories at Louisiana Tech, Grambling State University, and LSU, many schools, churches, fire stations, banks, hospitals, libraries, jails and recreational centers.
Herbert was co–owner of the Northeast Louisiana Rodeo in the 1950’s, a Charter Member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, a Member & Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Monroe and more recently a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was active in many civic organizations including the YMCA, Monroe Rotary and a Charter Member of the Monroe Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Having grown up on the Ouachita River, Herbert was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, playing golf and he loved eating at the Piccadilly where he was a regular.
Countless people have wonderful memories of working with Herbert, his quick wit and insightfulness were an inspiration to all of us. Contractors and former employees all have vivid memories about working with Herbert as well. He could be difficult to please; a trait he learned from his father who insisted it helped people to be their best.
Herbert always spent time looking out for the little guy, Herbert made sure that what was specified was something the small contractor could build. Providing jobs to those who really needed them including minorities was very important to him.
