Harold Floyd Lewing

Funeral services for Dr. Harold Floyd Lewing, 93, of Monroe, will be held at 12Noon Thursday, November 5, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Monroe, LA, with Rev. J. Roddy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe.Dr. Lewing died Sunday, November 1, 2015, at his residence.Dr. Lewing was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Floyd “Pat” and Maggie Durr Lewing. Dr. Lewing was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monroe. He finished Many High School in 1941. He joined the C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps) that summer and planted pine and oak seedlings and helped build bridges in Kisatchie National Forest for about a year. He attended college at Natchitoches, Louisiana for almost another year before he was drafted into the United States Air Force in 1943. Harold spent the Christmas of 1944 and 1945 in the South Pacific on Tinian Island, about ninety miles from Guam Island. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and was awarded three Bronze Stars. He calibrated the bomb site on the Enola Gay the day the atomic bomb was dropped. The replica is at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.Harold returned to college in 1946. While in College he was a member of the Shreveport boxing team, coached by Frenchy Acreneaux. He earned four college degrees in about twenty years. B.A., M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. Each degree was from a different state: Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, and Illinois. Also during that period of time he was a head basketball, track and baseball coach, a teacher, and a principal. Then he became a college professor of education at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Louisiana. Harold has had two books published previously: A Sackful of Happiness, in 1975, which was adopted by the Louisiana State Board of Education as a supplementary literature text for public schools. It was also adopted by the Utah State Department of Educations. His second book, The Hollow Tree UFO Gang, was published in 1996. His third book, When God Changes His Mind which was published in 1999. He wrote for The Sabine Index, a weekly newspaper published by Robert Gentry, in Many, Louisiana. Harold was also an Arm Chair Politician and a member of the Louisiana Teachers Association and Mensa.Survivors include his wife Carolyn Hoffman Lewing; three daughters, Debbie Lewing of West Palm Beach, FL; Carrie Lewing Vergis and husband Michael of Bossier City, LA; and Holly Lewing Roots and husband Dirk of Monroe, LA; grandchildren, Lexi Vergis, Lia Vergis, and Norah Arden Roots; and two sisters, Patsy Lewing Cooper and Juanita Lewing Ross. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 8:00PM Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at Mulhearn Funeral Home Monroe.The family wishes to extend their thanks to his sitters over the years, Donald Shaw and Anthony Hall for the caregiving to Dr. Lewing.
