Gretchen Louise Schauf was born on May 28, 1943, to Frederick L. and Laura Mabel Schauf in New Orleans, LA. She passed away peacefully on November 15, 2023, in Shreveport, LA. Her childhood days were spent growing up in New Orleans and St. Joseph, LA.
After graduating from Beauty School, Gretchen lived with her sister’s family in Kansas. There she met her beloved future husband, Alvin L. Weidman. In 1963, she was united in marriage with Alvin and one son Steve, was born to this union.
Their married years were spent in Phillipsburg, KS and then in West Monroe, Louisiana, where they spent their retirement years. Their most enjoyable annual vacations were staying in Arizona with their son, Steve; their daughter-in-law, Gail; and their “grand critters”. They also loved to travel and cruise. Their many adventures led them to Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Italy, Rome, and Germany; as well as traveling to several other states across the U.S. Gretchen and Alvin were married for 58 years until Alvin passed away in 2021.
Gretchen’s gift and heart was to be of service to others. She had a heart of gold and showed it in many ways, especially during holidays and family gatherings. She was an altruistic and beautiful person who always put others first. Her greatest moments in life were spent with her son and daughter-in-law in Arizona as well as time spent with her Louisiana family. She immensely enjoyed reading and spending time with her precious cockatiel companion, Petey.
She is preceded in death by her husband Alvin L. Weidman; her parents, Frederick L. and Laura M. Schauf; her sister, Constance F. Malmstrom; her brother, Laurance B. Schauf; and her nephew, Jeff Malmstrom.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Steve (Gail) Weidman of Arizona; her nieces, Charlotte (Claude) Williams and Teresa (Ricky) Smith of Louisiana; and several other Louisiana family members.
A private family burial and memorial service for Gretchen Louise (Schauf) Weidman, 80, of West Monroe, LA, will be held in December 2023 at Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton, LA, with Rev. James Tarrance officiating.
