Funeral services for Gloria Elaine Tuck Bennett, 88, of Monroe, will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lynn Malone and Rev. Jonathon Bevil officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
Gloria Bennett died Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Avalon Place in Monroe, LA. She was born to Henry Dee and Idabelle Keltner Tuck on December 27, 1924, in Monroe, LA. She graduated from Neville High School and attended Northeast Junior College (now University of Louisiana at Monroe).
Mrs. Bennett was a legal secretary and paralegal, having worked for the law firm of Theus, Grisham, Davis & Leigh for 41 years before her retirement in 1986. She loved to travel and loved her work with United Methodist Women, particularly teaching the geography studies in Conference Schools of Mission. She served as Louisiana Conference Chairman of the Wesleyan Service Guild, and held offices on the district and conference levels of United Methodist Women, her most recent office being that of Editor of the newsletter for Monroe District. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Monroe, and was proud of the fact that she was listed on the Cradle Roll of that church. She was a member of the Anna Gray Noe Sunday School Class, member of the Bereavement Committee, and member of Circle 6 of FUMC and the Edrith Smith Circle at McGuire UMC and treasurer of Church Women United. She was also a member of the DeNova Book Club, Ouachita Parish Republican Women’s Club, and the Neville Lunch Bunch, a long time treasurer with the Twin City Ballet and served as a volunteer for Monroe’s Little Theatre, AARP, Ouachita Council on Aging, Meals on Wheels, and St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Tuck; and her husband, Louis M. Bennett. Survivors include her brother, Clayton D. (Bill) Johnson, and his children, Veronica J. Lynch, William Johnson, and Donna Johnson of Cambridge, MA, and Joseph Johnson and his wife, Donna, of Somerville, MA; and by great nieces, Valerie and Kimberly, and great nephews, Michael, J.J., Eddy and George.
Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Page, Ernest St. John, Arnold Braddock, Edwin K. Theus, Jr., and Klien Crow.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 3900 Loop Road, Monroe, LA or to McGuire United Methodist Church, 2075 Arkansas Road, West Monroe, LA.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time, Tuesday in the parlor of First United Methodist Church.
