Gladys Emma Whitfield MurphyGladys Emma Whitfield Murphy passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday April 16, at Grace Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Richard Norman officiating, following a visitation from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, in Kilbourne Hall. Gladys Emma was born December 2, 1920, to Gladys Jefferson and Henry A Whitfield of Monroe. She attended Northeast Junior College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from L.S.U. in 1941. After graduation, she taught in South Louisiana. In 1943, she returned to Monroe and worked at the Ouachita National Bank. In 1948, she married James Edward Murphy. They were married for 55 wonderful years. A lifetime member of Grace Episcopal Church, she was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Altar Guild, The Daughters of the King and The Bible Study Group. She was a fifty year member of The Musical Coterie and The Twentieth Century Book Club. She was also a member of The Monroe Junior League, Monroe Symphony League, D.A.R., Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, and A.E. Chapter of P.E.O. She and James enjoyed traveling domestically and abroad. Gladys Emma was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, James Edward Murphy and her son-in-law, Douglas Owen Hickman.She is survived by her two children, James Henry Murphy and Beth, and Ann Murphy Hickman. Gladys Emma’s grandchildren are Douglas Hickman, Emily Hickman Rodriguez-Brizuela and Nicolas, Amy Murphy Kuhnert and Josh, Meg Murphy Wood and Matt. Great grandchildren are Caroline and Adelaide Kuhnert, Emma James and Lily Wood, and Nicolas and Emma Rodriguez-Brizuela. Pallbearers are Bob Seegers, Eugene Mongtomery, Louis Gavioli, John Jackson, Jimmy Martin, Josh Kuhnert, Matt Wood, and Nicolas Rodriguez-Brizuela. The family would like to express their love and gratitude to Gloria Brown, her caregiver and friend for the past several years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Grace Episcopal Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P. O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
