On Friday, November 26, 2021, Sonny, loving husband and father passed away at the age of 85.
Funeral services for Mr. George Robert (Sonny) Sumlin, Jr., of Monroe, LA, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at First United Methodist Church, 3900 Loop Road, Monroe, Louisiana, with Rev. Brian Mercer officiating. Interment will follow the service in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd., Monroe, LA. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until time for services at 2:00 P.M.
Sonny was born in Delhi, Louisiana on December 26, 1935, to George and Inez Sumlin. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sally Sumlin Calvert. He leaves behind his wife of 16 years, Darla; son, Kevin Sumlin (Jennifer); grandson, Sean; granddaughter, Claire; sister, Carol Sue Sumlin Bowles; nieces and nephews, Darla’s children, Brian Turner (Joann), Katherine Turner (Gail), and Stephen Turner (Tommy).
Sonny was a respected insurance sales director and agent, often recognized for his achievements in the profession. He was also a member of the Louisiana Tech football team. Sonny’s 85 years were filled with much love for his family, friends, and life. He and Darla especially their trips to Hot Springs, Arkansas.
His greatest legacy was his involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous. He used his 40 plus years of sobriety to help countless other overcome their addictions. Even when it was physically challenging for him, he found a way to attend his meetings and was an inspiration to everyone around him.
Pallbearers will be Cary Zeagler, Jeff Elkins, David Marchman, Steve Walters, Gregg Tousignant, Frank Maxwell, III, and Brant Mathieu.
