George Clinton 'Clint' Cummings

January 17, 1937 — February 7, 2016

Funeral Services for George Clinton “Clint” Cummings, 79, of West Monroe, LA will be held 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Burdeaux officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe. Clint Cummings was born on January 17, 1937 in Pioneer, LA and passed away at home peacefully on February 7, 2016. He attended West Monroe High School then went on to enlist in the Navy in 1955 where he served until his discharge in 1959. After his military service ended he returned to West Monroe where he met and married the love of his life, Julia Dillard Cummings, on September 16, 1960. After moving to the Luna community, Clint joined Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in 1971, where he served the Lord in many capacities as a member. One of his most treasured memories at Mt. Vernon was coaching basketball and in the late 1970’s, he helped form the first Baptist basketball league, the Northeast Louisiana Church Basketball Association, and served as President from 1979-1980. He also coached the high school boys’ basketball team that won two R.A. State High School Championships in Alexandria, LA. He loved the sport of basketball and used this passion to minister to any child that stepped onto the basketball court. He also used his role as a Gideon to minister to people and help spread the gospel, one way was visiting schools and passing out New Testament Bibles. In 1984, Clint moved his family to Metairie, LA. It wasn’t long after this move that he joined Parkview Baptist Church, where many friendships were made. On October 1, 1989, he became an ordained Deacon and served as Deacon at Parkview until he returned to West Monroe in 1992. Clint and Julia moved their church memberships back to Mt. Vernon and shortly thereafter he was asked to serve as a Deacon where he remained until his passing. He formed a forever bond with the Deacons through the years and truly loved serving in this capacity both at Parkview and Mt. Vernon. In 2000, Clint joined the ministry of Kingdom Builders and traveled each year to help build churches. He may not have had much to do with the actual building of the churches but lent his expertise in “gophering” and making sure there was plenty ice for the men. Clint enjoyed hunting and loved gathering in fellowship with the men of the hunting clubs he joined. But one of his greatest enjoyments was hunting with his grandson and the time they spent at the camp together making memories. Clint never met a stranger. He loved people and he was loved by so many. He looked forward each weekend to watching Saints football and LSU football, basketball and baseball, whatever the season might be. Those that knew him never saw him without parched peanuts to share or to give away. Even during the darkest days while battling his illness, Clint never lost his faith in God but instead felt blessed beyond measure. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vergie Cummings and Joys Cummings; brother, Joyce Cummings; and son, Craig Cummings. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Julia Dillard Cummings; daughter, Christy Hemphill and husband Daron; grandchildren, Caleb Hemphill and Caitlyn Hemphill; and numerous nieces and nephews.Pallbearers will be the Deacons of Mt. Vernon and his grandson, Caleb Hemphill.Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, West Monroe. Special thanks to Clint’s friends, Keith and Tonya Stephens, Buddy and Dewanna Tarver, Wilma and Johnny Cummings, Bo and Tina Wilkes, Terry Hamilton and Terry Johnston for those endless hours of staying with him through the night, the Deacons and church members who stayed with him, friends who visited, provided prayers, hugs, encouraging words and food throughout his illness; Dr. Michael Sampognaro who was more than just a doctor, the staff at St. Francis Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospice.
