Funeral services for Frederick H. Summers, Jr., 81, of Farmerville, will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 26, 2019, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, with Rev. Lynn Malone officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Fred was born November 18, 1937 in Monroe, Louisiana, and passed away January 23, 2019. During his growing up years, he spent time with his mother’s family in and around Robeline, LA, and with his father’s family in West Virginia, where he had many happy memories.
He was educated at St. Matthew’s Catholic School in Monroe and in the late 1950’s, moved to Long Island, New York, where he met and married Eleanor Mohrman Summers. Upon their return to Monroe, he began work at the Monroe Power Plant, worked for LP&L, and retired from Entergy after 34 years as a power plant operator.
Fred was a charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church and remained a member until it closed in recent years. He was a Master Mason for 58 years and a member of the Western Star Lodge. He was a consummate story teller, had a habit of bringing small gifts to family and friends, always made time to check on those who were ill or hurting, and loved his family unconditionally. His true passion, however, was fishing and he designed many of his own lures and other tackle. His “happy place” was in his boat and he would talk fishing to anyone who was interested and had a few hours.
Fred is preceded in death by his father, Frederick H. Summers, Sr. and mother, Mable Moore Johnson. Survivors include his daughter, Catherine Summers Whatley and husband Bill; grandson, William Rolfe and wife Krystle; granddaughter, Jana Whatley Elkins and husband Brandon; great-granddaughters, Amelia and Evangeline Rolfe, a third great grandchild expected in August; and life-long friend and companion, Mariana Burroughs.
Pallbearers are Will Rolfe, Brandon Elkins, Tim Kane, David Nelson, Bruce Walker, and Jim Wooldridge.
