Mr. Smith was born March 1, 1915 in Sunset, LA and passed away at his home in Winnsboro on June 20, 2011. He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1934 and retired after a 44 year career for HDE Hardwood Mill in Oakdale – the largest Louisiana lumber mill of its day. He served as first altar boy in Oakdale and was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oakdale. His love for God, family, fishing, and hunting was known by all who knew him. He was also a wonderful storyteller and had a memory that was unbelievable, but his greatest love was his wife Lois. He will be missed and remembered for his lust for life. He said once that we didn’t understand him, that he “never gave up”. He definitely “did it his way”, and left this world singing with the angels.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lois Duhon Smith, six children; Charlotte Dickey of Cankton, LA, Mike Smith of Franklin, LA, Warren and Theresa Smith of Winnsboro, LA, Nancy and Peter Trahan of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Carl and Adri Smith of Uniontown, OH, and Bill and Barbara Smith of Pittsburgh, PA, 15 grandchildren; Thad and Tonya Dickey, David Dickey, Ken and Vee Dickey, Doug Dickey, Diedre and Kenny Clark, Darian and Julie Smith, Jeff and Esther Smith, Jill and Mack Powell, Krista Smith, Marlene and Kevin Touchet, Peter Trahan, Steven Smith, Corey Smith, Jessica Smith, and Brian Smith, also 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great- great grandchild.
Pallbearers are: Thad Dickey, David Dickey, Ken Dickey, Doug Dickey, Jeff Smith, Peter Trahan, and Brian Smith.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 23rd from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a Holy Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Winnsboro, LA.
