Funeral service for Francis A. Phillips, 93, of West Monroe will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday July 24, 2008 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe with Rev. Jon Tellifero officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Calhoun, LA under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe.
Mr. Phillips was born January 16, 1915 in Many, LA and died Monday July 21, 2008 at home with his family after fighting a lengthy illness. Francis and his wife Maxine moved to West Monroe in 1947 where he was a superintendant on the original Commercial Solvents Corporation plant complex which is now Angus Chemicals in Sterlington, LA. Mr. Phillips started working for Ford, Bacon, & Davis Construction Corporation in 1936 and retired in 1980. Throughout his career, he supervised construction on plants and pipelines throughout the United States. One memorable experience was his work in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on a secret project that turned out to be the Manhattan Project. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of West Monroe, LA. Mr. Phillips was also a member and past president of Northeast Louisiana Associated General Contractors.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George Wesley and Zephie West Phillips and by his beloved wife of 56 years, Maxine Ross Phillips; daughter in-law, Olivia Phillips; and son in-law, Dewitt Methvin.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances Phillips Methvin of Alexandria and Nancy Blanchard and husband Conrad of West Monroe; two sons, William Ross Phillips and wife Pat of Rocky Branch and George Phillips of Star, MS; grandchildren, Marc Phillips and wife Jodie of Kingwood, TX, Dr. Jennifer Warford of Silver Spring, MD, Will Phillips of Houston, TX, Anna Phillips of Monroe, Jessica Decelle and husband Morgan of Monroe, and Noel Grower and wife Stephanie of Star, MS; and two great grandchildren, Scott Phillips of Kingwood, TX and Elliot Grower of Star, MS.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Walter “Buster” Bounds, G. Charles Phillips, and Charles B. Phillips; grandsons, Marc Phillips and Will Phillips, and Johnny Roan.
Honorary pallbearers are Richard Whitehead and Benny Chapman.
The family extends a special thanks to Annette Wacasar, Trudy Bryant, and Vickie Cummings for their exceptional care and concern. Also, thanks to Dr. Stephen McMahan with United Home Health and the staff of Agape Hospice, particularly Rhonda, Amy, Jamieson, Marilyn, Neta, and Paul.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, La.
