Fay Bullock Kitchens passed away peacefully at her home in Monroe on July 18, 2024. At her bedside was her devoted husband of 63 years, Bill Kitchens.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2024, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Rd, Monroe, LA, with Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating. Interment will follow in Faith Memorial Park Cemetery, 7337 LA-17, south of Delhi.
Fay was born at home in the farming community of Central in Franklin Parish on November 25, 1940. She lived in the same house until she graduated from Central High School when she went on to attend and graduate from Bish Mathis Institute (business school) of Monroe. Fay met her husband, William Floyd Kitchens, Jr. (Bill), at the Louisiana Training Institute where they both worked, and they went on to raise three rambunctious boys during the tumultuous times of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, spending 52 years in their humble home in the Treasure Island Subdivision north of Monroe.
After her children graduated high school, Fay entered college and earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Northeast Louisiana University. Then, Fay pursued and obtained a master’s in social work from Grambling State University. She later retired from the Monroe Mental Health Center as its Director of Children’s Services.
Fay was a faithful member of North Monroe Baptist Church beginning in 1973. She also enjoyed genealogy, rock collecting, tending her beautiful flowers, and watching cardinals and hummingbirds in her backyard. She loved to travel with her husband to Scotland, Ireland, Nova Scotia and many destinations across the United States.
Fay is preceded in death by her parents, James (Jim) and Vivian McLeod Bullock; her sister, Helen Marie Bullock; and her brother, Charles (Charley) Bullock. Tragically, she was also preceded by her oldest son, Paul Howard Kitchens, while he was still in his teens.
Mrs. Kitchens is survived by her husband, William F. Kitchens, Jr.; sons, Dr. Marshall Kitchens (Corrine) and Byron Kitchens (Ceres); grandchildren, Priscilla Kitchens, Peyton Ceres Kitchens, and Augustus Paul Kitchens; brother, James Foster Bullock (Janette), and sister, Lillian Sue Ford; and a host of nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her quiet temperament, good humor, and loving heart.
Pallbearers include nephews Jim Murphy, Justin Bullock, Parker Prisock, Barry Johnson, and Jeremy Brock and grandson Augustus Paul Kitchens.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd.
Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 502 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38102; to the Paul Howard Kitchens Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o ULM Foundation, 700 University Ave., Monroe, LA 71209-9010; or to the charity of one’s choice.
