Memorial services for Edward Machell “Mushy” Downing, 85, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the West Monroe Moose Lodge. Private family graveside services will be Saturday morning with Brian Ragan and Jan Dickson officiating under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
Machell was born October 12, 1933, in Monroe, LA, and passed away, at his residence on March 28, 2019, in Monroe, LA.
Mr. Downing was a Navy veteran and served as a radio operator during the Korean War. He later served and retired as an electrical engineer for the Army Reserves. Following his service from the Navy he worked for the Border Patrol and later worked and retired from the Highway Department in Monroe. Later in Retirement, he worked as an aide on the handicap buses for Ouachita Parish School System. Mr. Downing was a member of the Monroe and West Monroe Moose Lodge, where he was a past president and earned his Pilgrim Degree. He recently received the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award of the Louisiana Moose Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Bessie Mae Downing; the Mother of his children Louise Ragan Downing and wife Thellie “Dolly” Downing.
Survivors include son, Mark Edward Downing; daughters, Carmen Downing Ballew and husband Larry and Billie Downing Rowland and husband James; sister-in-law who he raised as his daughter, Janis Ragan Dickson and husband Merl; sister Maribeth Downing; step children, Pat Wilson and husband Douglas and family, Zoe Dartez Kean and husband Chuck and children Ashtyn and Taylor; grandchildren, Levi Downing, Kayla Downing, Ryan Dickson and wife Julie, Emily Ballew and fiancé Mike, Peyton Ballew, and Gabby Ballew, Lexie Robinson, David Robinson, Jr., eight step grandchildren and twelve step great-grandchildren.
The family especially appreciates all of the time and sacrifice given by our sister Billie for the care of our father during his last years.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to his Girls from Legacy Hospice and Staff, Dr. Thomas Williams and Staff and Alpha Care; and his caregiver, Monica Hines.
