Funeral Services for Dr. Earl D. Speights, 92, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, December 7, 2018, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, LA, with Rev. Charles Dupree and Mr. Gene Wright officiating. Private family graveside services will be held at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA.
Earl D. Speights was born August 6, 1926 and passed away December 4, 2018.
Dr. Speights was a member of Parkview Baptist Church and a WWII Army Veteran. He was a high school basketball coach, taking the girls’ basketball team at Negreet High School onto win seven state championships and the boys’ basketball team at Belmont High School to win a state championship also. Dr. Speights was inducted into the High School Athletic Hall of Fame for coaching basketball and was chosen as a Distinguished Educator at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA. He also taught at University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he later retired. He was a member of the National Field Archery Association. Dr. Speights won first place and a gold medal at the National Senior Olympic Games.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Della Speights; son, Bob Speights; grandson, Zachary Fordham; and sister, Ernestine Dees.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Audrey Jo King Speights; children, Edy Nicholson and husband Rickey, and Susan Fordham and husband Wendell; grandchildren, Chris Nicholson and wife Yvette, Seth Fordham and Abby Jo Fordham; great grandson, Ryan Nicholson; and brother, Ben Speights.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Dyess, Dr. Jim Wood, Eddie Lewis and Mike Fisher. Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe Caskey and George Davis.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. until service time on Friday at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, LA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home or to your favorite charity.
