E. R. "Buck" Lawrence

November 19, 1939 — June 29, 2018

E.R. “Buck” Lawrence, of Monroe, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018, at the age of 78, after a thirteen-year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Shirley Lawrence; and their children, son Michael Lawrence of New York City, daughter Kelly Lawrence Roark and husband Phil of Monroe, son Brad Lawrence and wife Amy of Monroe, and daughter Tracey Lawrence Lauve and husband Robert of Shreveport.

Buck is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, Terrell Kincaid of Austin, TX; Tucker Kincaid of Shreveport; Jordan Roark of Little Rock, AR; Spencer Roark of New Orleans; Zachary Lawrence and fiancée, Kristen Meier of Tyler, TX; Hagan Lawrence and wife, McKenzie of Monroe; John Kade Lawrence and girlfriend Sarah Morgan Sivils of Baton Rouge; Trevor Lawrence and girlfriend Sophie Ecklund of Monroe; and John Luke, Lily, Lola, and Olivier Lauve, all of Shreveport. He is also survived by the much -anticipated birth in August of his first great-grandchild, Gracie Mae Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tracy Lee Lawrence and wife Martha Anderson Lawrence; and sisters Myra Beth Lawrence, Juanita Brunson and Carolyn Dawsey.

Born on November 19, 1939, in Baskin, Louisiana, Buck played on the basketball team at Baskin High School. During his sophomore year, his father took a position at the Columbia Sawmill in Caldwell Parish, and Buck was promptly recruited to join the Columbia High School basketball team where he distinguished himself as an outstanding player. His talent did not go unnoticed, and he was granted a full scholarship to play basketball at Northwestern State College but departed before the end of the first semester to attend Northeast Louisiana State College (now ULM) where he met his future wife, Betty. They were married in 1961.

Buck worked at Standard Lumber Company until 1970 when he started his own construction company. The company began with home building and later expanded to include road and utility projects. The company was successful for many years and Buck retired in 2010 but continued to work on various projects with his son and partner, Brad, for several more years.

Buck loved to cook, and the family’s favorite time was always Sunday dinner at Papaw’s. He was known far and wide for his hospitality and especially his annual Christmas Eve Celebration. He truly loved cooking and the joy he could bring to friends and family with food. In his later years, he spent a great deal of time on his small farm off Harmon Johnson Rd. where he whiled away the hours taking care of his cows, chickens, llamas, and goats.

Visitation is at 10:00 AM Monday, July 2, 2018, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with funeral services to follow at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Obed Kirkpatrick officiating. Interment will be in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
