John Derwood Greene, PhDFuneral services for Dr. John D. Greene, 101, of Monroe, will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, November 3, 2014, in the Chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA, with Dr. David Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Roark Cemetery, Marion, LA, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home.John was born May 5, 1913 in Marion, Louisiana, the tenth of eleven children, to the union of Huey Allison Greene and Emma Evans Greene, and passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014.John’s education began in Union School where he was awarded the State Spelling Certificate in the 4th grade. He then moved in with his sister, Geraldine; who was a science and economics teacher at Calhoun High School. She was also responsible for teaching him music. His senior year he came to Marion High School and graduated in 1929. He completed a bachelor degree from Louisiana Tech and his doctorate from the University of Chicago and the University of Maryland. He had a rich and rewarding professional life that began in 1931 as a teacher in Rocky Branch. He followed this by becoming a teacher and principal at Point Elementary in a two-room school. He then became Supervisor of Schools in Union Parish. This included six high schools and many small elementary schools throughout the parish. In 1941, during World War II, he was drafted into the military and trained as an individual infantry replacement soldier, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. After 44 months he took a sabbatical to finish his formal education. Upon completion of his doctorate, he accepted a position as Associate Professor with the University of Maryland. In this position he had the privilege of representing the University as a consultant to schools and colleges throughout the United States, England, and Germany. He later accepted the position of Director of Instruction for Baton Rouge Public Schools and served as Adjunct Professor with LSU. His final full time professional position was as Professor and Department Chairman at University of South Alabama, Mobile. During his long professional career, he had the honor of serving as President of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, a large international association of teachers, principals, college professors and university presidents interested in the development of children and youth. He also served as National President of Elementary Kindergarten and Nursery Educations. After retirement he served as Adjunct Professor with Northeast Louisiana State University. He is predeceased by his wife and love of his life, Leone Lankford Greene; parents and siblings, Debbie Ophelia Nettles, Emma Virginia Greene, James Virgil Greene, Walter Burbon Geene, Geraldine Emma Orrell, Huey Dan Greene, Talmadge Wesley (Toop) Greene, Fred Thomas Greene, Paul Evans (Skip) Greene, and Timothy Tippit (Tim) Greene; and brother-in-law, K. D. Lankford.John is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Cheryl Greene of Marion, and special friend Lonnie Schrock of Monroe. Cheryl and Lonnie were like children to John and Leone in giving them special loving care and support for many years. He is also survived by another special friend, David Schmittizhe.Pallbearers will be Jim Leggett, Scott Green Jones, Chad Green, Robert Lane, Ben Jones and Dan Harris. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. H. T. Garner and Dr. Bob Rickett. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until 1:00, Monday, November 3, 2014, in the Chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe.
