Funeral services for Dr. James D. Kelly, 95, of Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 1, 2011 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe with Dr. Whit Holmes officiating. Private interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dr. Kelly passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011. He was a member of College Place Baptist Church. He attended Hardin Simmons of Abilene, TX and was a graduate of Baylor Medical College in Dallas, TX.
After completing his internship in surgery in late 1943, he was given the rank of Captain in the Medical Core in the Army. He joined Patton’s invasion of Normandy and fought till the end of the war as a Battalion Surgeon on the front lines. After the war and having performed countless amputations and major surgeries to keep soldiers alive until they could be taken to hospitals behind the lines, he decided he would never cut another human. When he returned to the US, he re-interned in cardiology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He started his medical practice in Monroe in 1948 and retired in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elethia Edwards Kelly; sons, James Douglas Kelly, Jr. and Robert Pheland Kelly; brother, Benjamin Kelly; and sisters, Louise Kelly Kornmann, Irene Kelly Brothers, and Claudeene Kelly Cotton.
Survivors include sons, John D. Kelly and wife Vicki and Benjamin Curney Kelly; grandchildren, Kenda Kelly Ducote and husband Darren and Katie and Sarah Kelly; and great granddaughter, Addison Claire Ducote.
Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
The family would like to thank Rose Garden at Rosemont and all the staff, and especially Karen Traxler, Dr. Charles Morgan, Dr. Matt George, and all of the hospice staff.
