Funeral services for Dr. C.B. “Buddy” Griggs, 93, of West Monroe, La will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at McGuire United Methodist Church with Rev. Francey Hooten officiating. Interment will follow in Hasley Cemetery, West Monroe, LA.
Dr. C.B. “Buddy” Griggs passed away on August 11, 2017. He was born on March 7, 1924 to Callie M. Roberts and Charles B. Griggs, both of Chatham, LA. He graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1942 and later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University in 1949. He went on to finish two Masters of Education Degrees from Northeast Louisiana University (NLU) and Mississippi State University and later his Doctorate in education from NLU.
Buddy is a veteran of WWII where he earned several medals including a purple heart. After training in Texas and Hawaii, he was deployed to the South Pacific and was in combat under General MacArthur. He was discharged in December,1945. He became a Master Mason in 1948, served in various capacities, and earned the honorary 33rd Degree. He worked for many years as an educator and went on to be a supervisor at Ouachita Parish School Board.
He was also a member of McGuire United Methodist Church since 1950 where he was a Sunday school teacher of the Mason class and served on numerous committees. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Darrell Griggs and Julius Griggs; two sisters, Mable Sims and Louise Hendricks.
Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Jean Griggs; one brother, Harold Ray Griggs (Janet); his children, George Griggs (Joely), Kay Griggs Hawthorne (Robert); grandchildren, Lyndsey Avery (David), Josh Griggs (Tabitha), Stephen Hawthorne (Kendra), and Ben Hawthorne (Andrea); and five great grandchildren, Landry and Nash Avery and Camille, Wyatt and Ruby Hawthorne.
Pallbearers will be Josh Griggs, Stephen Hawthorne, Eddie Horton, Charles Hendricks, Mark Hebert and Ray Hebert.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Monday, August 14, 2017 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to McGuire United Methodist Church building fund.
