Funeral Services Celebrating the Life of Dr. Bobby Gene Canterbury, 86, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 20th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe, LA, with Rev. Bill Cornelius officiating. Interment will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe. Visitation will be Thursday, April 19th from 5 - 7 p.m. at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe, and from 10 a.m. to service time on Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Bob was born July 13, 1931 and passed away on April 14, 2018. Bob is preceded in death by his father, Jessie Cantrell Canterbury; mother, Opal Gosdin Ivy; and sister, Nova Dee Waller.
Bob graduated from Sarepta High School in 1948. In 1951, while serving in the Air Force, he married the love of his life for 66 years, Mary Woodward Canterbury. Bob earned his BBA from Northwestern State University, his Master’s in Mathematics from Louisiana State University and his Doctorate in Management Science from Louisiana Tech University. While teaching at University of Louisiana Monroe from 1966 – 1980, he founded AIMS, Inc., a computer software company.
A man of many accomplishments, Bob was an inspiring teacher and professor, devoting himself to the success of each student. At AIMS, he created industry-changing software for convenience store fueling. Upon retirement, Bob was an avid reader (he aspired to read every book in the public library) and undertook the pursuit of duplicate bridge, achieving the rank of Life Master. In his retirement years, he stayed active and close to friends as a founding member of the ROMEO (retired old men eating out) Club. Bob was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 52 years, where he served faithfully on many committees, as an elder, and as the executive director of the congregation.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. Bob & Mary believed in helping others and on numerous occasions through the years, they opened their home to many in need of a place to live. His love and generosity was infinite. Bob was a man of integrity and compassion who touched the lives of family, friends, employees, and students. Bob’s love for life will live on for many generations.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Woodward Canterbury; six children, Tricia Chancellor (Rick) of Dallas, TX, Michelle Simon (Bruce) of Marshall, TX, Myra Canterbury (Howard Dockery) of Dallas, TX, Kathryn Hertz (J.L.) of Crawfordville, FL, James Canterbury (Karen) of Richardson, TX, Robert Canterbury (Traci) of Monroe, LA; 20 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and sister, Carolyn Ivy Smith of Springhill, LA.
Pallbearers are Mike Waller, Sammy Waller, Trey Waller, TJ Waller, Jerry Patton and Michael Malpass. Honorary pallbearer, Howard Malpass.
The family would like to thank Daphne Martin, Odis Griffin and the rest of the staff of Hospice Compassus for the loving care they provided to Dad during his last weeks of life.
