Dr. Bill Arrington

Funeral services for Dr. Bill Arrington of Monroe will be held at 2:00pm Tuesday, April 3,2018 at First Baptist Church, 201 St. John St., Monroe. Visitation will be Monday, April 2 at the church from 5:00-7:00pm. Rev. James Doughty, Rev. Clarence Powell, and Rev. Tommy Frost will officiate. Kent and Laura Arrington, Elise Leitzel, and Amanda Terry will provide music for the service. Dr. Arrington was born July 11,1933 in Rixie, Arkansas and died battling Lymphoma at M.D. Anderson on Wednesday March 28, 2018.

Dr. Arrington received his doctorate at University of Arkansas and his Bachelor’s at Ouachita Baptist University, where he lettered in five sports, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame, 1954-55. It was there he met a beautiful woman named Martha and they were married for 58 years. He and Martha traveled, exercised, ran marathons, and loved each other dearly. They supported local theater, the symphony, and athletics. He enjoyed being a member of the Monroe Lions’ Club. For 43 years he officiated Northeast La. Football. He had indefatigable energy that fueled his lifelong activity.

During his 35 years at NLU, now ULM, he was Professor of Kinesiology where his positive attitude and encouragement influenced the lives of many students as well as anyone around him. He received the Outstanding Teacher Award 1972-73 and wrote the method books for tennis and bowling.

Bill loved the military and was a Colonel in the US Army Reserve. His ability to work on projects at the highest levels of the Dept. of Defense led to numerous trips to the Pentagon. He was selected to be a Mobilization Designee and served in that capacity for a number of years.

Two years ago, he married Chlorica who rescued him from overwhelming grief after Martha’s death. She patiently loved him through his loss. He loved and appreciated Chlorica and immensely enjoyed their life together.

Papaw loved and supported his family. He attended all their activities and special events that he possibly could.

Dr. Arrington loved his church and his Savior. He used object lessons and stories to teach because he said that’s the way Jesus taught. He was a deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and lay minister.

Dr. Arrington was preceded in death by his parents William Franklin and Aliene Itty Arrington, wife Martha Buckner Arrington, son Joseph Scott Arrington, father in law Rev. J.W. Buckner and wife Dorothy Buckner, and step mother in law Juanita Buckner.

Survivors include his wife, Chlorica Farmer Arrington and her children, Keri Bollinger (Steve) and Ted Warkentin (Rebecca); son, Kent Arrington (Laura), daughter, Elise Arrington Leitzel (Tim), daughter in law, Edna Arrington Mayor (Gary), brother, Jim Arrington (Carol), brothers in law, Luther Buckner (Annette), Jim Buckner (Linda), John Wordy Buckner (Sandy), sister in law, Dottie Buckner Clark (Mike); grandchildren, Dr. Jennilee Arrington Nolan (Will), Emily Arrington Alexander (Justin), Grace Mayor Crespo (Danny), William Arrington, Sara Mayor, Jackson Mayor, Bo Mayor, and Elise Mayor; great grandchildren, Ella Little, Charlotte Nolan, Abel Crespo, Penelope Alexander and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pall bearers are Chris Allums, James Christopher Allums, Jon Thomas Allums, Mark Buckner, Cecil Lipscomb, Jackson Mayor, and Will Nolan.
