Services for Mrs. Doris Pigg Lewter, 93, of Monroe, LA, will be 11:00 AM Monday, September 9, 2024, at North Monroe Baptist Church with Rev. Ben Hutchison officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Doris was born September 15, 1930, and passed away on September 4, 2024, surrounded by her family. A faithful member of North Monroe Baptist Church for more than fifty years, Doris served as a Sunday School teacher for over four decades, including working with special needs children long before churches offered such a ministry. She was a loving wife of 68 years to Bob who passed away in 2020 after seventeen years with Parkinson’s Disease. Throughout those years, Doris devoted herself fully to his care. Doris began her teaching career in her native Tennessee, sharing her love of learning with children in four different counties. Following five years as a teacher in McLean County, Illinois, when the family relocated to Monroe, she continued to touch the lives of hundreds more children in the Ouachita Parish School System until her retirement.
Beloved “Memaw” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was affectionately known to her entire family as the “Scrabble Queen.” Doris thoroughly enjoyed playing all types of games, as well as baking her fabulous breads, cookies and cakes, sewing and solving puzzles. Whenever anyone had a need, Doris reached out to share delicious homemade food and prayers and support. An avid lifetime reader, Doris always had a book by her chair, along with her beloved Bible, which she read daily. Doris leaves a legacy of strong and quiet faith in her Lord, deep knowledge of and devotion to God’s Word, faithfulness in prayer, and a life that reflected her love for her Savior.
She was predeceased by her parents, James C. and Mary Foster Green Pigg; husband, Robert Lincoln Lewter; two sisters, Olivene Pigg and Joetta Pigg Bigham; two brothers, Thomas Doak Pigg and James Cecil Pigg; and son-in-law, Stephen Hutchison.
Doris leaves to cherish her memory her three daughters: Sherri Lewter Barton and husband Steve, Becky Lewter Hutchison, Melani Lewter Martin and husband Zac; five grandchildren: Cindi Robinson and husband Burny, Sara Oglesbee and husband Jonathan, Ben Hutchison and wife Kate, Tammi Wright and husband Kris, and Jeremy Frandsen; and ten great-grandchildren: Patrick, Nora and Lucy Robinson; Hunter, Colton, and Allie Oglesbee; Eli and Emma Hutchison; Connor Gorski and Makenzie Frandsen.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan, Hunter and Colton Oglesbee; Burny and Patrick Robinson; and Steve Barton. Honorary Pallbearer will be Roger Kinnison.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, September 9, 2024, at North Monroe Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Monroe Baptist Church Daring Faith Building Fund.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caring staffs of St. Joseph Assisted Living, Elara Hospice and Lillie Sitters.
