Funeral Services for Don Allen McGowan, 70, of Monroe Louisiana will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 2, 2016 at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe Louisiana with Preacher Paul Carter officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 1, 2016 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Mulhearn Funeral Home.
Don was born to Marvin and Lillie Mae McGowan on February 3, 1946 in Oak Grove, Louisiana and passed away August 29, 2016 in Monroe, La. He lost his courageous battle with cancer after a yearlong treatment. During that time his family and friends were always there encouraging him. His loving wife, Judie, was by his side and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends. Don always said "we make a cute couple".
Don was a graduate of Ouachita High School and attended Louisiana Business College and proudly served in the United State Army for two years. He earned his wings in Jump school, was 8th Infantry Division, III Army Corps and received special recognition for his Infantry assist while stationed in Germany. Don was a successful business owner in the retail seafood business for the last 30 years and was often referred to as "Mr. Don the Fish Man". He enjoyed working with the public and never met a stranger. He was a hardworking man who loved his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin McGowan and Lillie Mae McGowan Gilbert, sisters Maureen Hinson and Lonette Read. He is survived by his loving wife Judie Springer McGowan, daughter Melissa and husband Matt LaCas of Monroe La, daughter Marcie and husband Joe Wright of Atlanta Ga, eight grandchildren Miranda, Mallory, Reese, Chloe, Peyton, Tyler, Kaitlin and Dylan, and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a loving sister, Jerry M. Davis of Monroe La, brother n law and best friend Buddy Davis of Monroe La, Don said Buddy was the brother he never had.
A special thanks to Buddy for being by his side for every appointment and treatment and niece Stephanie Davis Dispenza as they both battled cancer together. They received excellent care and support from Dr. Kevin Gallagher and staff. The family would also like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Kathy Jo Cooper and Norma Massey of Winnsboro, La for taking such great care of Don/Daddy in the final months.
Pallbearers will be Buddy Davis, Lawrence Ballew, Clyde Miller, Jackie Lawrence, Dale Young, Dave Luffey and Walter Hawsey. Honorary Pallbearers will be Johnny T Johnson, Bernard Laffoon, Reggie McDaniel, Bynus Duke and Barry Webb.
