Funeral services celebrating the life of Mrs. Dena Emmons Leggett, 67, of Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, April 7, 2022, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe, LA with special friends, Johnny, and Corinne Pace officiating. Interment will be in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dena died April 4, 2022, at her residence after a very brief illness.
Dena was a member of First Baptist Church of West Monroe. She retired from the Ouachita Parish School System after 39 years, where she served as a schoolteacher, coordinator, and principal of A. L. Smith Elementary and later opening the new Sterlington Elementary School. Prior to her principalship in OPSB, she was proudly the first principal of Morehouse Magnet School. She graduated with a B. S. degree in education from NLU and obtained her master’s degree plus 30 in education administration. Dena touched the lives of many students and fellow teachers she encountered over her lengthy career. She made many wonderful friends whom she held dear.
Dena’s life has been one devoted to service. At NLU, she served as an SGA Education Senator and Phi Mu Alpha Rho Chapter President. After retirement, she volunteered at St. Francis Hospital where she was awarded the Champion Service Award. Unable to stay away from the school building, she participated United Way’s read to a student program. Most recently, you could find her serving in the Grief Share ministry where she would show up with “a smile and a cake.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fontaine and Marsha Emmons, brother, Raymon Wilson Emmons, grandparents Winfred and Clara Emmons and Yancy and Bernice Hatten, as well as many aunts and uncles and dear friends
Survivors: her husband of 45 years, Pete Leggett; her sons and daughters-in-law, Britton and Nicole Leggett and Chad and Bonnie Leggett; grandchildren, Emory-Cooper, John Peyton, and Adeline Jane Leggett, countless precious friends.
Pallbearers will be Clint Bordelon, Harold Dickens, Jeff Donald, Scott Fordham, Kenny Guillot, Joey Jacobs, Jason Roberson, and Chip Wells.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Bordelon, Stanley Burkett, Clyde Elliott, John Peyton Leggett, Sam Roberson, Brent Wilkes, and Buddy Wood.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe, LA.
