Funeral service for Mr. David Leroy Whittington, 78, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, January 18, 2024, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe with Rev. Matt Coker officiating. Graveside service will be held at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Rayville at 11:30 A.M., Thursday, January 18, 2024. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe
Mr. Whittington was born on June 8, 1945, in Monroe, LA, and passed away on January 13, 2024, in Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Doris Cherry Whittington, and brothers, Doug and Don Whittington.
Mr. Whittington was an owner and operator of gas wells. He was a businessman, who wanted to be remembered as an honest and caring man. He served in the U. S. Army during Vietnam serving with the Sixth Battalion Transportation, receiving the Army commendation Medal for Meritorious service in Vietnam. He served two years and achieved the rank of SGT. Along with serving his country, he also drove the veteran’s bus from the West Monroe Police Department to Shreveport for the veterans who had hospital and doctor’s visits. He spent numerous hours waiting for the veterans to get done to drive them back to West Monroe. Mr. Whittington was a member of Paron Baptist Church and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, which he had special nicknames for, and his name was “Pappy”, and Uncle. One of his favorite places to eat was Catfish Cabin, where he was known as the “Frog Leg Man”.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Whittington; three daughters, Babs Meador (Johnny), Becky Jones (Justin), and Amanda Belgard (Jim); brother, Victor Whittington (Ellen); grandchildren, Josh Polk, Morgan Jones, McKenzie Coleman, Marli Jones, Braylyn Greene, and Briley Belgard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Alfred Cherry, Sonny Harrington, Barry Webb, Mark Hodge, Chris Popwell, and Wade Greene, Jr.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Boys Town, local Food Bank, Doctors without Borders, or the Louisiana State Police Association.
