A Celebration of Life service for Mr. David Louis Johnston, 87, of West Monroe, Louisiana will be held at 12:00 P.M., Monday July 29, 2024, at First Monroe Baptist Church, 2470 Tower Drive Monroe, Louisiana with Pastor James Doughty and Pastor Ray Owens officiating, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe. Visitation will be from 10:30 A.M until service time at the church. David Louis Johnston was born on January 30, 1937, in West Monroe, LA, and passed from this life on July 25, 2024, at West Monroe Guest House in West Monroe, LA.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Glenda Owens Johnston; his parents, David A. and Edna Hart Johnston; and his brother and sister in-law, Donald Ray and Judy Johnston.
David is survived by his daughter, Jana Johnston Cox and husband, James; son, Brad Johnston and wife, Sharon; son, Ken Davis and wife, Mary; grandchildren, Addison Goff, V, Kendall Goff, J. W. Cox, III, John Cox and wife, Cheyann; Hannah Johnston Posey and husband, Justin; Sarah Johnston Hance and husband, Taylor; Faith Johnston, and Emily Johnston; two great grandchildren, Grayson Ember Posey and Neeko Everest Posey; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends. He was affectionately known as “Pop” by his grandchildren.
He graduated from West Monroe High School in 1955 and from Northeast Louisiana State College (now ULM) in 1960 with a degree in accounting. While in college, he met Glenda Owens, and they married on April 15, 1960. After college, he served in the U.S. Army as an officer stationed in South Carolina. After two years of service, he returned to Louisiana where he started his career as a Certified Public Accountant. He built his business, Johnston & Company CPA’s and practiced for over 56 years. David served on numerous committees for the Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants. David was also a Certified Valuation Analyst and Accredited in Business Valuation. He was very proud that two of his children became CPA’s as well. David partnered with his son for over 25 years and loved his profession.
David loved the Lord and was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Monroe where he taught Sunday School for many years. It was a joy for him to serve as a trustee for First Baptist Church during the construction of their new building. He was a longtime member and supporter of the Little Theater of Monroe, once serving as president. As a graduate of West Monroe High School, he was a huge fan of the Rebels and a longtime member of the Rebel Club.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or First Monroe Baptist Church.
