Funeral service for Mr. Dalton Keith Harrell, 94, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 2:00PM Sunday, December 22, 2024, at North Monroe Baptist Church in the West Venue with Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating. Interment will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 7:00PM Saturday, December 21, 2024, at the funeral home.
Mr. Harrell was born on July 5, 1930, in Scott County, MS, and passed away on December 16, 2024, in West Monroe. He was a member of North Monroe Baptist Church. Mr. Harrell was an Army Veteran of the Korean War finishing his tour as a Corporal. He was a graduate of Bastrop High School, Northeast Louisiana State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and a Minor in Social Studies, graduate of Mississippi College with a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision, and earned his 30 semester hours of graduate credit above the Masters Degree from NLU within the field of Education. Starting his career in 1957 as a wireline operator for Otis Engineering and moving on to be a teacher and coach at Causey High School in Causey, New Mexico, Mer Rouge High School, Mer Rouge, LA, Buras High School, Buras, LA, Ouachita Parish High School, Monroe, LA, Sterlington High School in Sterlington, LA, and at Jack Hayes Jr. High School in Monroe starting from 1959, until 1986. He became Assistant Principal at Jack Hayes Jr. High School and later became Principal, after which he became acting principal at A.L. Smith Elementary. After serving in education for many years, Mr. Harrell took a position as Director of Osterland Recreation Center from 1988-2008. After retirement he went on to become a prescription delivery driver for Mason’s Pharmacy.
Mr. Harrell was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Elsie Rita Comeaux Harrell; parents, Horace and Freddie Harrell; grandson, Logan Johnson; and nine siblings, Melvin Harrell, George Harrell, Leo Harrell, Aline Bennett, Jaqueline Grammer, June Hudson, Mary Jean Santsche, Kenneth Harrell and Hubert Harrell.
Survivors include his children, Janice Worley (Biff), Bonnie Ochs (Paul), Gerry Johnson (Michael), and Betsy Esswein (Mike); grandchildren, Ashleigh Worley, Christopher Esswein (Jaime), Adam Alexander (Chessi), Julie Miles (Michael), Stephanie Alexander Sanders (James), Raleigh Worley, Michaela Tidwell (C.J.), Layton Johnson, Paul Ochs III (Charlotte), Kristin Eppinette, Lucas Johnson, and Hannah Ochs; great grandchildren, Azlyn Alexander, Elsie Alexander, Shelby Nuber Peraita (Jay), Gabe Gittinger, Rodney Dolliole, Rocko Dolliole, Rory Dolliole, Isabela Escalante, Phillip Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Miller Miles, Georgia Miles, and William Miles; one great great grandson, Atlas Peraita; brother-in-law, Malvin Comeaux; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Layton Johnson, Lucas Johnson, Adam Alexander, Paul Ochs III, C. J. Tidwell, and David Lehne. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Venable, Archie Evans, John Tannehill, Robert Anthon, Benson Bennett, Fred Bennett, Bryan Bennett, Robert Bennett, Dallas Bennett, Bubba Bennett, Richard Bennett, Richard Hudson, Mark Santshche, Rik Santsche, and Kyle O’Neal.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the special care given to Mr. Harrell, to Dr. David Yarbrough and nurse Christina and to Lisa, Ashley, and the staff at Stoneybrook Memory Care.
Memorials may be made to Gideons International, North Monroe Baptist Church, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
