Cordie Bell Nelson Harvey

Cordie Bell Nelson Harvey (92) of Monroe, Louisiana passed away Thursday, October 26, 2023, at St. Francis Medical Center after a brief stay at Landmark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where she had begun a physical therapy program to recover from a successful hip surgery. “Cordie Bell” as she was known by many, was born in Dunn, Louisiana on December 16, 1930.

She was a graduate of Epps High School, then attended beauty school in Monroe. Upon completion, she began working for Vera’s Beauty Shop in Delhi, Louisiana, where she met the love of her life, Grover Harvey, whom she married in 1951.

Cordie and Grover opened Cordie’s Beauty Shop in Delhi, where they enjoyed many years of providing a full-service salon to their community. Cordie was an active member of First Baptist Church in Delhi for 59 years, where she sang in the church choir and quartet, directed the primary children’s choir, played in the church hand bell group, taught weekly Sunday school, and faithfully attended Prayer Meeting every Wednesday night. She was also a member of the Delhi Garden Club. After retirement, Cordie served on the decorating committee at First Baptist for countless church functions.

Cordie greatly enjoyed tending her yard and garden with Grover and was awarded yard of the month many times throughout the years she lived in Delhi. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family camp in Lake Bruin during the years she was raising her only daughter, Judy. She loved to paint and was a talented artist. She loved to cook and bake, hosting social events large and small. She enjoyed vacationing with family at national parks and travelling to mountain and coastal regions all over the country. Among her greatest pleasures were cooking large traditional meals and desserts for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas each year, and she loved to bake cakes for her loved ones’ birthdays and celebrations. She moved to Monroe and flourished in her later years becoming a dedicated member of North Monroe Baptist Church, where she adored her Sunday school classes and classmates and attended every church function and banquet, she possibly could. Cordie was so proud and grateful to God to still be living independently over 16 years after the loss of her husband, Grover. She loved to read and keep up with current events. She was reading the Bible from cover to cover for the sixth time. She enjoyed socializing with her dear friends and neighbors in her retirement community, and loved watching Saints and LSU football.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Grover Levon Harvey; parents, Morris and Betty Alice Nelson; sisters, Maurice Lewis, Pete Sumner, Helen Johnson, Velma O’Neal, Jaimie Newton, Weista Miller, Ida Mae Perry, Robbie Cagle; brothers, Robert (Bear) Dixon and Bubba Dixon; sisters-in-law, Birdie Chapman, Vera Harvey and Margaret Lucille McEacharn; nephew, Bobby Chapman; nephew, Bill (Chig) Chapman; niece, Shirley Chapman; niece, Linda Bills; nephew, Greg Lewis; niece, Sharon O’Neal; and nephew, Johnny O’Neal.
