Funeral services for Rev. Claud Dexter Hughes, 91, of Monroe, will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, LA with Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

Rev. Hughes was born April 27, 1919 and passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Cornerstone Hospital in West Monroe. He was the youngest of seven sons born to Bob and Honor Hughes of Opal, AR. Rev. Hughes graduated from Ouachita Baptist College and received his Master’s Degree from Mississippi College. He pastored churches in Arkansas and Louisiana for seventy years and also served as Area Director for the American Heart Association and the March of Dimes. At the time of his death he was the pastor of Oak Ridge Baptist Church

Rev. Hughes loved preaching, ministering to his congregation and community, and studying the Bible. He also enjoyed gardening, reading, watching sporting events, discussing politics, having lunch with friends, and being a part of all family activities. While he will be missed greatly, the amazing legacy he leaves behind will comfort and strengthen us all.

Rev. Hughes was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Atha Liles Hughes; his parents, and six brothers.

Survivors include his daughters, Allise Hughes Lane and husband Joe, Harriet Hughes Haddad, and Lynn Hughes Thornton and husband David; grandchildren, Lara Lane, Ryan Lane and wife Dee Anne, Micah Haddad and wife Elaine, Robbie Haddad, Justin Thornton and wife Alison, and Grant Thornton; great grandchildren, Jonathan Lane, Natalie Haddad, Julian Haddad, and Aidan Thornton; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Lane, Micah Haddad, Robbie Haddad, Justin Thornton, Grant Thornton, Joe Lane, and David Thornton. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Skip Wilson, and David Powell.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe and Wednesday from 9:30 AM until service time at Oak Ridge Baptist Church.

The family would like to express their thanks to the following: Cornerstone Hospital and Wound Care Center, Avalon Place, St. Francis Medical Center, Dr. Charles Morgan and staff, Dr. Greg Sampognaro and staff, and Dr. Michael Hand and staff.
