Clara F. Nelson, 99, died peacefully on January 31, 2021 in her son Phil’s home in Monroe, La.
Clara Nelson was born on October 23, 1921 in Narvarre, Kansas to Lutheran Minister. She began taking piano lessons at the age of five and by 13 playing the piano and singing to her father’s congregations. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1939 and Mesa Junior College in 1941. On December 26, 1941 she married her high school sweetheart, Lewis Claude Nelson, who is a retired Army Air Corp, World War II veteran.
Her husband’s job with Murphy Oil took them to El Dorado, Arkansas where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as deacon and elder. She directed the children’s choirs for eighteen years, was a soprano soloist in the adult choir and for many cantatas, community concerts, and several choral groups. She also taught piano lessons for twenty years. Her love of music and song grew and continued throughout her life.
In 1970 she graduated from the University of Southern Arkansas with a degree in Elementary Education and began teaching first grade at Yocum Elementary School. Her many other interests included garden clubs, Homemaker’s club, and Newcomer’s Bridge Club.
Retirement brought Mrs. Nelson and her husband to Lake Claiborne in Homer, Louisiana. They were members of the First Presbyterian Church. They moved to Arcadia, Louisiana into assisted living. After Lew’s death she moved Saint Joseph assisted living. Clara’s last four years were spent living a very happy life with her son, Phil, and wife, Donna in Monroe, La.
She is survived by two sons, Bob and Phil, one daughter Patsy and eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Clara’s last words were “I’m comfortable here”. Clara’s now in heaven with Lew.
The service is being conducted by Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. The service is at First United Methodist Church at 3900 Loop Rd, Monroe with visitation at 11:30 and 12:00 sanctuary service with Rev. Randy Tate presiding. The burial procession will proceed to Arlington Cemetery on Highway 146 in Homer, La. Mom loved good ol “El Dorado”.
Due to the virus, the church service will be streamed live at 12 and the burial service at 230 February 9.
