Funeral services for Charles Nolan Hill, 81, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 2 pm Sunday, January 22, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, 2308 Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA with son-in-law Eddie Nugent officiating. Interment will follow in the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, Monroe, LA.
“Sonny,” as he was fondly known by family and friends, was born July 11, 1935, in Oak Grove, Louisiana, to the late Charles Bert and Alyce McDowell Hill. He passed away suddenly in his home Thursday, January 19, 2017.
He moved to Monroe with his beloved wife, Betty (Jane Bird) Hill, where he resided for more than 57 years. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary along the way. Sonny served in the US Army stateside during the Korean conflict. During this time he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. Additionally, Sonny was a heavy equipment operator by trade and excelled in operating any type of backhoe, bulldozer or crane. He was known for his sixth sense that kept him safe from unseen danger on many construction sites. Poppy, as he was affectionately known by his grandchildren, loved his family immensely, but was tired of fighting the good fight. He spoke often of longing to be with his wife Betty since her passing 8 years ago.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Hill is also preceded in death by his brother, Donald Hill.
He is survived by his daughters, Cherrie Hill Mattison, Terrie Nugent and husband, Eddie, Charlotte Hill Jackson and husband, Wade; grandchildren, Megan Roshto and fiancé, Martin Diaz, Matthew Mattison, Emorie Nugent, Averie Nugent and husband, Quint “Q” Gale II, and Landon Jackson; great grandson, Leland Gale and the soon arrival of baby Diaz in May; sisters, Virginia Hill Chop and Billie Faye Hill Burgess; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Wade Jackson, David Hill, Greg Hill, Joey Chop, Bert Chop, Trey Fluitt, Martin Diaz, and Scottie Nugent. Honorary Pallbearers will be Landon Jackson, Matthew Mattison, and Marcus Hill.
Visitation will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
