Charles Ray (Chuck) McCullen was born August 17, 1938, in Shreveport, LA, and passed from this life to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 13th, 2024. He grew up in Simsboro, LA. Chuck loved spending time with family, including his favorite aunts and cousins. He was very athletic, playing baseball, basketball, and in general had a great love for the outdoors and nature. After high school, he was encouraged to attend Northeast State. He always said, “I never knew I could get a scholarship for something I loved to do.” He attended Northeast State and was awarded both a basketball and track scholarship. He was eternally grateful for the support and encouragement he received from Ted Gullatt. Once at a state track meet, he was declared the winner of a neck and neck race. After the race, he told the official, “I did not cross the line first”, therefore declaring the opposing team the winner. His coach was quoted in the newspaper saying, “I could not have been prouder of Chuck even though it cost us first place.” That was the kind of guy Chuck was. He loved his years at Northeast State, meeting friends and still having so many of those close friends today. He served in the U.S. Navy after graduation and returned to Monroe to work for George Luffey in medical sales. George became a mentor and very close friend to Chuck for many years. He went on to share business relationships with his dear friends Bill Lee, Gary Luffey and Tommy and Lynn Bankston.
Chuck loved his family and extended family. He loved North Monroe Baptist Church and its staff, and bragged about how special they were, including The Dickins Life Group, always saying how much love and support they offered to everyone.
His family was so special to him. He always loved to talk about his dad’s musical talent and how much his mother enjoyed it. He always thought his brother Don Ed was the most talented person he knew, great at any sport, and he wanted to be just like him growing up. He adored his grandchildren and treasured spending time with them individually and all together. Whether it was taking them to feed goats or attending their graduations, he wanted to be there for it all.
Chuck leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 40 years, Nell; sons, Michael Troy McCullen and Breck Lane McCullen; daughters, Tracy Norman (Doug) and Paige Smith (French); grandchildren, John Patrick McCullen, Katherine Claire McCullen, James Henry McCullen, Christopher Michael McCullen, Anna Grace Norman, Olivia Leigh Norman, Ella Grace Smith, and Sarah Stephen Smith; sister, Kathy McCullin Coco; sister in law, Mary Beth McCullen, and members of his extended family, the Lees.
He was preceded in death by his father, Cloyd Edwin McCullin; mother, Mornetta Bartlett McCullin; brother, Don Edwin McCullen; sister, Patricia McCullin Knotts; and son, Kyle Jefferson McCullen.
The family is grateful and extends additional thanks to Dr. Tom Gullatt and Denise, Elara Caring Hospice, the staff at The Oaks Nursing Home, Dr. Ricky Caples, Dr. Charles Morgan and staff, Cindy Beeman, Carol and Bruce Hanks, Jennifer and William Sparks, Caroline and Rodney Cascio, and Susie and Mike Husted. We also thank Dianne and Mike Graham, Judy and Vernon Rogers, Jan and Joe Albritton, Ann McMickle and Nancy Stutts.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
