Funeral Services for Mr. Charles Ester (Charlie) Blackwell, Jr., 78 of West Monroe, LA will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe with Rev. Andy Myrick officiating.

Mr. Blackwell was born December 17, 1929 in Bastrop, LA and passed away on May 31, 2008 at his home in West Monroe, LA.

He was retired from Southern Hardware in Monroe, LA and had owned several businesses in the past. He graduated from Bastrop High School and from ULM formerly NLU in 1959.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Blackwell, Sr. and Edna Mae Blackwell and his sister Joann Rushing.

Mr. Blackwell joined the Navy in 1950 and served in the Korean War. Charlie had many hobbies during the years including woodworking, fishing, and Nascar. His biggest joy though was the years he and his son Andy spent on the Motorcross Racing circuit. He could take a motorcycle apart and fix it and put it back together in a matter of hours and be ready for the race the next day. They traveled Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Louisiana racing and making life long friends. Charlie never tired of talking about racing, friends and good memories.

Survivors include his daughter, Brandy Harrison and husband Jamie; Brandy’s mother, Susie Blackwell all of West Monroe, LA; two sons, Al Blackwell of Dallas, TX and Andy Blackwell and his wife Carla of Conway, AR and their mother, Beverly Tolar of Hot Springs, AR. Also surviving are brothers, James Blackwell of Bastrop, LA, and Buddy Blackwell and wife Ina of San Antonio, TX.
Charlie has left four living heirs of his inspiring life in his four grandsons, Chase and Jon Tyler Blackwell of Conway, AR; Jim and Ryan Harrison of West Monroe, LA.

Charlie lived several years longer than expected because of his love for and delight in his grandsons and their accomplishments. He was very proud of his sons lives and careers, but his daughter’s continuing education was the twinkle in his eyes. Charlie was always ready to help anyone in need and leaves many friends and good neighbors behind. Also several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. His good friend and neighbor Polly Slade was a special blessing to him over the last several years and the family would like to thank her for all her help and support.

The family would also like to thank Family Life Home Healthcare for all their help especially Allison. Also special thanks goes to Premier Hospice and their employees especially, Mary Thompson for the many hours and assistance they put into helping Mr. Blackwell remain in his home.

Visitation will be Monday, June 2, 2008 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe.
