Carolyn Arden Hoffman Lewing
Funeral services for Mrs. Carolyn Lewing, 81, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at First United Methodist Church in Monroe, LA, with Rev. Brian Mercer officiating. Visitation will be held from 3-5PM Monday, December 27. 2021, at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe. Interment will follow funeral services at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carolyn was born on December 1, 1940, in Madisonville, Kentucky, and passed away Sunday, December 19, 2021, at Azalea Estates Assisted Living Facility in Monroe, Louisiana.
Mrs. Lewing was preceded in death by her husband of almost 60 years, Dr. Harold Floyd Lewing, and her parents, Judge John Langley Hoffman, and Anita Fox Hoffman.
Mrs. Lewing was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and the women’s Bible study group, in Monroe, LA. Mrs. Lewing was an only child. She was a freedom Rider in the 1960’s. She obtained a master’s degree in art from Vanderbilt (George Peabody) University in Tennessee, where she also met the love of her life, Harold. They married on Friday the 13th in June. She stood by and cared for her husband throughout the last years of his life.
She taught art for a brief period at Northeast Louisiana University. She continued jewelry making, painting, and drawing throughout her entire life. She taught her children all about art and, as an educator, she was always helpful throughout their school days.
Mrs. Lewing was a wonderful homemaker, mother, and grandmother to her family. She made the best Hungarian goulash while singing Santa Lucia. Carolyn always looked forward to the Kentucky Derby each year, and always made sure to wear a special hat.
Survivors include her two daughters; Holly Roots and her husband Dirk of Biloxi, Mississippi, and Carrie Vergis and her husband Michael of Benton, Louisiana, and grandchildren; Norah Arden and Vanna Noelle Roots, and Lia and Lexi Vergis.
