Carol Flower Layton Parsons, 92 years young, passed away May 20, 2021, at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, surrounded by family. Carol was born on January 25, 1929 in Monroe, LA to Robert Layton and Carol Flower Layton.
Carol grew up in Monroe, attended The Hockaday School in Dallas, TX, Newcomb College of New Orleans, and graduated from the University of Colorado. She studied at the Sorbonne & Ecole du Louvre in Paris and did graduate work at New York University. Carol was an art historian specializing in decorative arts, a guide at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for over 30 years, and, ever curious, an ardent traveler who made friends all over the world.
Carol raised her four children in Bryn Mawr, PA, then returned in 2000 to her family home, Layton Castle, in Monroe. Carol was active with the Rotarians, Rosarians, Colonial Dames of America, The Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation, and many other local organizations. She managed a portfolio of real estate investments, including the Layton Castle apartments, and also gave tours of her historic home and hosted weddings and events on the grounds.
A cultivator of relationships in the arts, preservation and in her community, Carol was a storyteller who enjoyed the company of new and old friends - many recall an afternoon of margaritas on the Castle balcony.
Carol was preceded by her brother, Robert Layton Jr, and is survived by her children, Pamela Parsons Dupuy (John), Merrill Parsons Leonard (Brian), Ward Layton Parsons (Jenny), Joseph Henry Parsons, III (Anna), and her grandchildren, Adam Layton Brown, (Emily), Benjamin Layton Leonard, Jim-Elias Obereigner, Isabelle Louise Leonard, Henry Gustav Parsons, Samuel Berlin Parsons, Stig Layton Parsons, and her first great grandchild, Daniel Layton Brown.
The Funeral Service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe, LA at 2pm, May 29th, 2021. Visitation begins at 1pm. The private interment service for the family will be held at the Bry Layton Cemetery.
If desired, friends may make memorial contributions in Carol's name to the Masur Museum. The Parsons family is hoping to gather and share stories about Carol by her friends, including former Castle residents, at the Mulhearn website:
