Camille Hancock Wood

February 15, 1929 — February 17, 2021

Camille Hancock Wood was born February 15, 1929 and passed away February 17, 2021. She was the child of Camille Parker Hancock and Wilton Sutton Hancock and the wife of Dr. Robert D. Wood, who preceded her in death.
Camille leaves behind to cherish her memory her three children, Merilyn Crain (George) of Abbeville, LA, Nancy Williams (Alan), and R. Douglas Wood, Jr. (Regina), both of Monroe, LA. Camille is also survived by her brother, Charles C. Holdeman, Jr. of New Orleans, LA. Camille has seven grandchildren, Allison Istre Lagasse, Stephen Scott Istre, Carolyn Crain Broussard, John Creighton Crain, Elizabeth Williams Bonnecaze, J. Alan Williams, Jr. and Ava Marie Wood; eight great grandchildren, and two devoted nieces, Mary Ann Dunn and Linda Hanchey Taylor.
Camille attended Monroe City grade schools. However, she lived most of her teenage years in Natchitoches, LA and graduated from Natchitoches High School in 1945. She continued her studies at Ward-Belmont School in Nashville, TN majoring in music. Upon graduation there, she extended her voice studies on scholarship at LSU where she became a lifelong fan of LSU Tiger teams. While at LSU she served on the Student Council, Student Senate, and as President of the School of Music. She was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta sorority and Sigma Alpha Iota honorary music sorority. After her marriage, Mrs. Wood enjoyed performing locally for many groups including a life-long membership in the Grace Episcopal Choir. She also had the great pleasure of performing in the Monroe Little Theater musicals “My Fair Lady”, “Sound of Music”, as Maria and “Camelot” as Guinevere. She felt privileged to sing at many local marriage ceremonies and funerals.
Next to her family, friends, and church, she loved gardening, and antiques. At age 59, she opened an antique shop which made it necessary to travel to Europe once or twice a year buying antiques. While she thoroughly enjoyed making new friends through her antique shop, she cherished her many lifelong friends. She was fiercely loyal to family and friends. She was noted for her willingness to offer an opinion, solicited or not, on any subject to anyone at any time. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
She is survived by her devoted caretaker and friend, David Outley, along with her faithful dog Tip, both of whom provided immeasurable comfort and solace during her final years.
Camille was a member of various other clubs and organizations including Junior League of Monroe, 5th District Dental Auxillary, Potpourri Book Club, Bayou DeSiard Country Club, and the Lotus Club.
Due to Covid-19 there will be a private family service at Grace Episcopal Church on February 25, 2021 with Rev. Donald M Smith officiating. Interment will be at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Grace Episcopal Church, Monroe, LA or Ouachita Humane Society, Inc.
