Funeral Services for Bobbie Fletcher McGaha, 60, of Calhoun, LA will be held at 1:30 PM Monday, June 25, 2012 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral home in West Monroe with Rev. Neal Everett officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time.
Bobbie was born in Winnsboro, La. on May 21, 1952 and she was raised in and around Baskin, LA. She picked cotton, cleaned houses, fixed peoples’ hair, and worked on the Bookmobile while growing up. She played basketball at Baskin High School for Hall of Fame coach Tiny Tarbutton during Baskin’s basketball glory days. After graduating from Baskin High School, she moved on to Northeast Louisiana University and graduated with a degree in office administration.
She worked at Ford, Bacon, and Davis where she made many friends and was loved and respected by those she worked with. She and her sidekick brother (who was a photographer at NLU) went everywhere together. He was tragically killed in an offshore explosion in 1984 and Bobbie was devastated. She never quite recovered. She still drove his 1981 Chevrolet S-10 truck until she died. After taking some time off from work she came back and worked as a legal assistant for Fred McGaha, attorney with the firm of Grant and McGaha. She worked with Fred for twenty years until she retired. She was loved and respected by all of the lawyers she worked with, their office personnel, everyone at the Clerk of Court’s office, and especially by all of the clients she worked for. Many became personal friends after their legal matters ended.
Bobbie married Fred McGaha on January 25, 1992 and they celebrated their 20th anniversary this year. She is survived by Fred and her two step sons, Lane McGaha and his wife, Annie, and Wade McGaha; along with her sisters, Pat Fletcher, Linda Kelly, and Ellen Walker; her nieces, Donna Jones, Lisa Graef, and Jana Hile; her nephew Butch Jones; and brother and sister in law Robert and Tricia Hile. Bobbie was preceded in death by her mother, Dollie Mae Fletcher, her father, Stanley R. Fletcher, and her brother, David Fletcher.
Bobbie was only six years old when her father died leaving her mother responsible for raising the kids. The kids had to all pull their weight to make it work and Bobbie’s work ethic throughout her life reflected the values she learned growing up. She was extremely frugal and found great delight in capturing clothing bargains at the Goodwill store. Her idea of a good time on Friday night was to shell a couple of bushels of peas.
Bobbie loved her cats. Ms. Kitty and Blackie were the loves of her life. Davie took their place when they died and he slept on Bobbie’s head every night. She could never say no to a stray cat on a cold night.
Bobbie took pride in her home and she decorated it with furniture and mementos from past family members. She loved her vegetable and flower gardens. Cooking was her specialty where she was known far and wide for her deer roasts, purple hull peas, okra and tomatoes, and cornbread.
Bobbie died on June 20, 2012. This was literally the longest day of the year. She was a Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church of Calhoun. Heaven will be a little brighter with her there and our world will be a little dimmer with her gone.
Memorials may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.
